My DMP is due for it's first payment this week :j (started on the road to being debt free now) and today I had a brainwave. A few months ago, I called my mortgage company who I have previoulsy had arrears with but is up to date now and explained to them our problem. Being reeeally over committed to debt and husband being unemployed for 6 months. Anyway, they agreed to change us to interest only for 3 months. This meant our payments will go up as of august but only by a couple of pounds so that is OK, it just meant for the last two months, and this month, we had a litte extra cash (about £200 each month) to make token payments to everyone, get new tyres on the car and pay for a plumber we desperately needed but could not afford before.
Anyway, this concession is due to end this month, so from August we go back to repayment.
I don't really want to go back to interest only again as at some point, we will have to find the extra cash. But today I thought I would call and ask about the possibility of extending the mortgage back to 25 years.
We currently have 19 years to go.
Anyway, by extending the mortgage back to 25 years, we will have an extra £170 a month to play with.
They also gave me the option to extend it back to 30 years but I said no to that.
My plan is, extend back to 25 years and use the extra cash to pay on our DMP which will hopefully help reduce our Debt Free Date, currently at just over 7 years . So, if I can bring this forward, I will then be able to pay extra each month off my mortgage to bring it back down once the debts have gone.
I was in two minds all day about whether to do this. At first I thought it was a good idea. Then I thought I was just getting more debt, but I have decided I think it will be beneficial so will call CCCS tomorrow and tell them that we will have more to money available to pay to them each month from next month.
What do you all think? Am I crazy? Or am I doing the right thing?
