Selling story to magazine tips?

I am contemplating selling my real life story to a magazine. If i'm honest I could do with the extra money but also I would like to make people aware of a medical condition too... I am wondering whether any of you guys have any tips on how I go about selling my story, how do I get the best deal etc etc? Any tips or an old thread will be really useful.
