Just came back from Spain where a few times I had a dessert called "flan" - the ones I had were a bit tasteless though.... and I was reminded of a dessert a South American friend taught me to make years ago. So I thought I'd try and remember it and have a go....
Anyway, it came out fantastic!!! And quite OS I thought - easy and cheap to make:
Tip a can of condensed milk into the blender, put in the same amount of normal milk. Add 3 eggs and whizz.
Put the mixture in a dish, put this dish in a dish of hot water and put it all in a low-ish heat oven. It's done when it's gone solid and the top is golden brown (OMG the best bit!!!)
Then you leave it to cool, I quite like it when it's been in the fridge a bit.
Please feel free to add more exact instructions if you know how to cook this. I also have a dodgy electric oven, so I never know cooking times and temperatures (this seemed to take a while and I think the top may burn before the inside is cooked if the oven is too hot).
Also I was thinking that although I love this just by itself.....what could you put with it??? Fruit? Chocolate sauce? Caramel sauce?
(Maybe I shouldn't be thinking of this as I nearly ate the whole damn thing myself!! )

My mum used to make flan, she used to buy a pre cooked base, which was a kind of cake, and then she used to fill it with fruit and jelly (leave to set in the fridge)!!! Not sure if what you are describing is the 'cake' base, but might be!!!!0

it's more like a wobbly pudding thing than a cake.
When I ordered it in Spain I was imagining more what you said (a cake or pastry base with fruit or something) but then remembered it's something different when it turned up!0 -
Flan is more like creme caramel than a fruit flan.
There is a mexican recipe here:

In the base of your dish, add 100g granulated sugar and 4tbsp water. Microwave on HIGH for 4 mins, then swirl around the dish to coat the base and sides. Add the flan mixture and cook as normal - that way you get a lovely creme caramel finish!
I made it the other day and had forgotten how lovely it was!0 -
Thanks! Will most definitely be trying the caramel sauce!0

My ds2's best friend's mum is Spanish and she makes flan for him when he goes round for tea (along with paella). He's always asking me to make it, but as it's got eggs in it's no good for dd.0

Alex - would this recipe be fattening by any chance?
My jeans keep shrinking for some strange reason.
Looks to see if I have a can of condensed milk in cupboard. I do. :jDon't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.

unfortunately yes, I think!
As I was making it I realised I could probably have just eaten all the condensed milk straight from the tin (that was when the spoon I was using to get it out accidentally went into my mouth......)
I remember from when I was in South America that they sell condensed milk alongside sweets and choc bars - in little tubes. Very dangerous!!!0
