Im writing this on behalf of my parents, they dont know Im writing - but im sure they wont mind.
My father has been made redundant, he is currently recieving Job Seekers Allowance, which is the first time in his life. ( He is in the process of trying to claim his owed redundancy money - which is proving difficult!)
He owns his own property with my mother, with no mortgage. They have debt amounting to approx 40K, which when my father was working was quite managable.
Currently he is only recieving JSA and my mother a small wage each week. They cannot recieve Tax credits as my mother doesnt work enough hours. My father litterally is earning about £60 a week from his JSA and is actively looking for work.
They are really struggling as they do not qualify for an IVA as you have to be working, and do not qualify for a Debt Relief Order as they owe more than the 15k threshold.
They are extremely distaught and have always been hard working people who have worked all of there life, to pay off there mortgage and give there children a decent life.
When they spoke to the IVA specialist, they said that they didnt qualify as my father isnt working, but had he have been - in the 5th year of the IVA they would have to sell there house or release equity from it as they are homeowners. This is an option they really really do not want to take as the house is all they have left. All they have worked hard for all of there lives.
Is there any help out there? Please they are desperate..
Thank you in advance

Hi
Please stop your parents from any further discussions with an IVA specialist. NOW.
If they are mortgage rfree, all that wioll mean is that they have to release the £40K equity from their house AND pay aboutb £6K in fees.
They need to talk to one of the debt charities ASAP. CAB, CAP, CCCS or NDL.
