Has anyone heard or experienced this business before? Just wondered what others thought?
On Friday I was working from home and had a knock on the door. It's a company called Neptune's Basket - they basically deliver a range of frozen fish, some of which is just filleted fish but others are prepared items.
Being completely naive about what they might sell, I asked if they had any prawns, to which he replied 'yes, let me show you them'.
So, along he trots to his van and a minute later comes back with a box of prawns. I asked him if I could take a fiver's worth to which he replies: 'sorry, we only sell them in boxes'.
How much is a box I ask him?
His reply: £55!
I was pretty flabbergasted and sent him on his way, but I just wanted to see if others actually used this company. The amount of prawns in a box is probably worth around £10 - £20 by my reckoning, but they're selling them for £50. And worse, there's no guarantee of the quality or freshness of the items. They could have been sitting around for a week before being frozen.
Has anyone else heard of Neptune's Basket?

Yours is the only entry which refers to a fish company.

I couldn't find anything on this company, but when I asked others (in real life, not on the forums!) a few people of my parent's generation seemed to think they were a well-known business.
I'm in Surrey but I think they operate out of Tunbridge Wells, so I assume they serve Kent as well.
I'm not suggesting it's a scan at all...but I was just a bit confused by their prices! Turning up door-to-door to sell frozen fish which you can't tell the quality of, and charging around 2 - 3x what I think it would be priced at in the supermarket.0 -
Never heard of that particular company, but when I was a kid, there used to be a similar van went around the villlage once a week selling fish.
Can't understand why they would only sell whole boxes if the fish was frozen. Unless the boxes were sealed I suppose. Opening boxes in a van and trying to weigh out small quantities would probably lead to all sorts of H&S problems nowadays.
As for the price, the supermarkets sell prawns as a massive loss-leader. Our local fishmonger sells fish at a similar price to Tesco, but not prawns. He says they can't buy them for the sort of price the supermarkets sell them for.0 -
Could it be Neptune's Table?

Never heard of them myself but did a quick bit of googling. There is a MSE thread about them here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/16086610
