lucky, 2 job offers (one private & one public)?

After many months of hunting my GF has had the fortune of being offered to job roles:
Both positions are for an admin assistant type role
One is for the Police, One is for a large private sector firm
Salaries are about the same
I am not aware of the benefits at this moment in time (we are awaiting the formal offer letters)
In your humble opinions which one would be the best to go for ?

a) public sector Police, b) private sector large company
A) means she will be looked after but could maybe suffer from public sector redundancies - as per the papers !
B) means she would not be quite so well looked after but might find it easier to gain promotion, redundancies could come about too

All Thoughts appreciated ?

I think Police could be pretty risky with the cuts expected within the forces. I spoke recently to a Police civilian and they are worried as they (civilian Police employees) expect to be first for the chop with what they feel are inevitable redundancies looming!
The large private sector may be the best bet?

All things being equal, I think she should go for the one that she thinks she will like the most. Obviously things like pay and conditions could swing the decision, but you can't try and second guess things like future redundancies etc.

None of us has a crystal ball, after all. ;)

I disagree - my sister is a senior "civilian officer" with the Police. Civilian officers are in fact cheaper than police officers and it is cheaper to appoint them than it is to have trained police officers answering phones or doing administrative roles. These things have to be done - there isn't an option. If you have anything about you promotion can be swift, and if there are redudancies (which can happen anywhere) then the best staff will be less likely to go. She will have better benefits in the public sector, continuous service between related employers (which can be interpreted quite widely by some employers in the public sector - I know a number of local authorities which acept police service as continuous). And once you are in, whilst redundancy isn't impossible, it is the last resort for public sector employers - for private sector employers it always comes as one of the first!

Congrats to your girlf on the job offers! i think its a tough decision with many firms taking a first-in first-out approach if redundancies loom.
i think she should go with the one that looks the most interesting, having police on your cv is a plus point in my book and might be more interesting than pen-pushing at a private firm?!
still good luck whatever she decides!

ask for a fabio clause (guarantee of contract length, or a payoff if cuts take effect)- they must have had funding approved for the job to start with..?

Make a list of the best bits of both jobs. What job is more appealing. I would be inclined to chose on the basis of hours, travel distance and things like that. I really don't think there is much chance of losing her job with the police. I am public sector and there are a lot of more mature people waiting patiently for a redundancy offer. Younger people are cheaper to employ.

I would go for the private sector job. I suspect that in the police you are a 'nobody' unless you are a police officer, just as in the health service you are a 'nobody' unless you are a doctor. There will be more opportunities for promotion I would have thought in the private sector and I think it looks better than 'police' on a CV (public sector workers are often assumed to be lazy clock watchers, however unfair that is). I wouldn't make the choice based on likelihood of redundancy as this is unknown for both options; however, in the event of redundancy, she would be more likely to get a decent pay-off in the private sector IMO.
