How did you choose your mortgage broker?

Hi All,

I am just in the process of wondering where to place a mortgage. There are a number of companies that advertise in the local paper, on street signs etc inviting people to come in, but how did you choose yours?

I too did my own and didn't find it to hard at all. Are you certain you need a broker ?

we have asked a few friends and also called london and country who are mentioned by Martin on the main bit of the website. OH is merrily chatting to someone else a friend recommended at the moment. I would suggest ringing or going into a few and asking some questions, including the same ones in each and seeing what they answer. (e.g if all answer one way except one i might not choose them if you see what i mean!)

    hope that helps?

We have a S/O house and used one reccomended from the HA. We used him when we bought this and we used him again tonight, we got a great deal to begin with and tonight an even better one which has made me very happy! We wouldnt have been able to do it ourselves tbh.
Ask friends/family and see who they used if they used one.
    Good luck x

Apart from our very first mortgage, I have always done it myself.
I would spend some time scouring everywhere for the best deal that suited us.

We are very happy with our existing deal (shown below) and now unlikely to ever change it.....
ORIGINAL MORTGAGE AMOUNT £106,454.00 (Started Sept 2007)
    NOV 2021 O/S AMOUNT £1,694.41 OUR DEBT REDUCED BY £104,759.59 by std regular, over-payments & off-setting.
BofE +0.19% Tracker Repayment Offset Mortgage Discounted Sept 07-10 then increased to BofE +0.62% until 2027

The best are brokers who can get through to the underwriters direct, and explain your circumstances properly.

The box ticking nature of the standard application form means that people who are perfectly able to afford large mortgages get screened out before an underwriter has seen it.

The majority of brokers just bash their head against a brick wall by dealing with the call centres. The best brokers have a personal relationship with the underwriters, who know that the broker is ringing up with genuine prospects, as opposed to trying to beat a dead horse every time.

Alas, it's always whom you know, but realise that you can't abuse the privilege.

Several colleagues at work had used the same fee-free broker and recommended him highly, so I looked no further
