Well my pay went in this morning so I handed in my notice shortly after getting to work. All the boss said was I had to work the rest of today or pay him for it (probably cause they've paid me for it in that pay period) so I told him in that case I'm taking one of my accrued days holiday today (worked out I've accrued 2). I then walked out.
Spent my afternoon relaxing in the huge park just down the road I'd never found time to visit before. You wouldn't believe how much I appreciated the Greenery/Woods/Lake having spent the last 5 and a half weeks locked in an office with no windows!
On to better things hopefully!
Going to be busy searching for some shift work, and then a new Engineering job. I can support myself for a couple of months without resorting to moving back to the parents. Just think some summer work will tie me over till I can find a new Engineering job

Thanks for the update! And good luck with your plans. I don't think you have made a mistake and I am glad you have not been driven by fear of not having a job.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Good luck and it did sound like a nightmare place: I hope you find something much better soon. Walking out of jobs is not great but when you are young with no real commitments, it's the one time of your life you can get away with it, so I also think you did the right thing.
But a bit of advice:
overtime: a lot of salaried jobs require overtime that is not paid - or it's sort of 'included' in your salary anyway. You need to find out whether it is something common in your industry. I can imagine that when there is a big important project on, it's all hands to the deck for whatever hours are necessary to get the job done. A good employer will still expect this. It's part of the world of work where you are at a level above hourly paid. This does effect hobbies etc. Shame. But there you go. If you want to work in this field you may have to accept a major change in your leisure activities. Again, it's part of the world of work. Do NOT tell any prospective employers that you gave up this job because it interfered with your karate! While we all need a work/life balance, there are times when an employer needs you to put work first. If you say something like that it sounds as if you would leave work in the middle of doing something important to go and mess about in a gym (no offence). Your karate may be important to you but it isn't to anyone else, and it makes your priorities sound very skewed.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
Thanks
I was actually planning to stick with the job despite the overtime. It was the management attitude that really did it for me. Still getting some positive replies from my job applications already
If they ask in interview I'll have to think of something, probably lack of career progression and no training as a reason for leaving. Something to think about! I will be positive about the job and say I enjoyed the Engineering etc.. eager to find something new in this area... 0
