Just wondering

I bought my lunch from the restaurant at debanhams today and I signed for the payment on my card instead of using chip and pin-which i haven't done in ages!!!

I digress though... When I got home and sorted through my purse I noticed that instead of giving me the receipt the sales assistant gave me the receipt that I had signed to make the payment. This got me wondering...can debenhams now not take payment from my debit card as they do not have the signed receipt?

Not trying to get out of paying as I enjoyed my macaroni cheese it's just never happened before and I'm wondering what happens if they dont have my signed receipt.

Thanks!

    Hi,

Yes they can, the machine takes the payment from your card via some sort of telephone line connection. The piece of paper which you sign is just in case you dispute the transaction at a later date.

I don't understand it these days, if they want to use chip and pin for security reasons (and everyone has to have the kit to use chip and pin) - why then are some shops still allowed to swipe the card and get us to sign the piece of paper....?
There is no excuse for rudeness. Ignorance on the other hand is excusable – you don’t know what you’re talking about.

I've had this happen to me before and yes the money will still come from your account.

The reciept you have is just a copy of the transaction- its already gone or going through ('going' through as its the weekend and will 'go' through on monday). They use the reciepts for their own purposes- to cash up the till and ensure everything has been accounted for but all that it will mean is the tills will look different to their own count. Wont affect you.

The sometimes do this for several reasons, a security check (very rare and randomly they ask for a signature just to double check that its not stolen apparently) and sometimes their systems break down and all they can take is signatures. I used to work in a store and this only happened once in the two years I was based on the tills. I also had the signature request happen to me and immediatly called up the bank who explained it all to me- made me feel a bit silly but at least I now know that signatures can still be requested at times.

Retailers had to sign up to chip & pin in order to retain the insurance given by the card issuers that they would not lose out should the transaction be fraudulent. Those retaining the old signature method lost that assurance.

This was the case when C&P started. I don't know whether there are still merchants who are not signed up and are still using the old method permanently - or even if the banking system can still accommodate them.

You do still have to sign occasionally but, as stated above, that seems to be only in the case of a sytem failure.

As others have stated it will go through.

When I worked at Marks every so often the till would ask for a signature, it was apparently a random security check by the credit card companies...perhaps about 1 in 100 or 1 in 200 it would ask to sign. You wouldn't believe how many cards aren't signed or the signature has worn off, and how many people are using the card from their elderly mother to get their shopping etc...all legit but if we went back to signing for just a day it'd cause complete mayhem :)

In our store we have a problem with one specific card so have to get a signature on that sort of card.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare
