payback time?

During the first few months of this year things were a bit quiet for my employer(who i've been employed with for ten years with no written contract) so the odd day there was no work he paid me for, eight days in total spread over five months. during the last month things have picked up dramatically thank god but now he's asked me to work shifts over the weekends saying i owe him the eight days back. Any Feedback on this thread would be greatly appreciated.

The moral thing is to help your employer out like he helped you out during the quiet time (this is presuming he didn't make you take them as holiday?), it swings both ways.

Legally you could probably tell him to get stuffed but beware that it could come back to haunt you

Is he offering pay for these days as well, if he is then really you should try and help out IMO

Google whacker, Thanks for your reply. I have been helping out as much as possible door to door is a twelve hour day for us. I have gone back in on two night shifts after working in the day. Dont get me wrong i wouldnt take advantage but this is after taking a 15% paycut six weeks ago. There is no pay for working these extra days

Ah, if you have taken a 15% pay cut, then I would be telling the boss that he would be getting his 8 days back in 53 working days, but I would discuss working the days back when he has a plan to put the pay back.

do you have a sense for how the company is doing financially?
is it a case of do this now, to save the company and your job, or is it a case of him taking home less profit and so he decided to take it out of your wages instead. I know you won't necessarily be able to tell this

You could say to him okay I'll do this for 8 days, then no more, then you need to start paying me

If you only give half the details you will only get half an answer :p

I would be less inclined to help out if you have taken a paycut and as you are saying do long hours as it is now.

If you are busy it maybe time to renegotiate hours but the other thing is that if you were being paid industry standard wages and then they are cut and your boss is using this extra % to get more business then in the long term it is unlikely to be sustainable. If it is just that the industry in general is more busy then again I would be asking for my wage to go back up.

Personally, if you have been paid 8 days then I'd work the 8 days back [but bear in mind if it is at a weekend then it's at a different rate than during the week, so time and a half] and then refuse to work any more until your pay is put back to the rate before the cut. It shows willing but doesn't take the p.
