The cost price of the wine may contravene the rules of the board but it is a great prize.[/QUOTE]
Anyone who goes out to buy products or services that they would not normally purchase, or even use, simply to enter a competition should seek advice as this behaviour suggests a step beyond comping as a hobby and may be an indicator of an obsessive disorder in the same manner as shopahlics and compulsive gambling.
In the case of a product which someone would be likely to purchase anyway the actual cost of entering the competition is not the price of the goods/service but the cost of the entry method, text, stamps etc.
In the 80's, before the magical world of the internet, I used to be part of an informal group of compers who exchanged the type of info that is on this forum, the consensus was that you don't buy things to enter comps unless it is something that you want/need anyway.
There is a valid argument for a thread here as many people would like to know about promotions and quite often the purchase may simply mean changing from one brand to another one week or month. In this way the purchase price of the goods would not constitute any cost of entry to the competition as it would be a cost that would be borne regardless of the exisence of the competition.
