Cleaning a cast iron & bronze fireplace

Hope i'm in the right place, has anyone any ideas how to clean up a cast iron fireplace.
It has bronze decoration on it which has become tarnished and the black is very dull.
thanks in advance VLT

    Hiya,

You can buy a wire brush extension for a drill (fits on the end like a normal attachment) I would recommend giving the fireplace a go over with that, then repolish the brass and black lead the cast iron sections (remember with black lead a little goes a long way and it is MUCH easier to add a bit more than try to remove the excess!)

I've got a cast iron fireplace and I live by the sea so it can get a bit rusty from time to time. I gently go over the rusty patches with a brillo pad and then rub some baby oil onto it to keep it shiny, I've got four cats so the hair sticking to it is a bit of a slog but I only do it once a week and it takes minutes.

I so sound like a crazy cat woman now! :rotfl:

I use Zebrite, and an old tootbrush to get into the mouldings :)

There's an older thread here, that I'll add this to later.
