Please check your bank statements.

Hi there we have a mortgage with the Brittania building society.
Our 5 year fixed rate ended in may 2006. We had decided against the mortgage advisors advice to have a 10 year fixed rate.
We were really pleased we had done this as the interest rates have gone up agaIn.
Anyway i was checking through my monthly bank statements and noticed we were actually paying more money to the Brittania. This should have been less as the interest rates were actually lower when we did the 10 year fixed rate.
I rang them up on tuesday to explain. They got back to me today and said that head office had recieved all the forms cashed our cheque but hadn't put us on a fixed rate.
Therefore they now owe us money and it will take 7 days to sort out. Well i wasn't happy about this just glad we had noticed the mistake.
My DH said that we should get some compensation for this i am not so sure. I will just be happy to be paying out the right amount and to get any money owed to us back. So what does everyone on here think. Should we get some compensation or just be happy when it is sorted out.
Also please everyone check through your bank statements. You never know what mistakes have been made.

  • I assume that you offer said fixed rate etc?

If it is a mistake and they are putting it right, you might ask for a small gratuity to cover the interest you could otherwise have earnt on the extra money that you paid.

Yes we are definately on a 10 year fixed rate. Might just be worth asking for some kind of conpensation. Someone siad to me today if you don't ask you don't get. So i will see what they say.
