Off the top of my head:
Population 60 million?
(assume uniform age distribution: not true big bulge in "baby boomers" and young immigrants and their kids neither of which yet qualify for care homes).
Average stay in a care home 4 years (I've seen 3 quoted else where).
IE 5% of population potentially qualify to spend the last years of their life in a care home.
But only 1/3 and 1/5 of the population do depending on their sex.
Average that as 1/4. 5% is now 1.25 percent
So 1% of 60,000,000 is 600,000 plus 150.000 = 750,000 (nice round number) of "crumblies" living in residential institutions.
How do we know?
Will the census pick up accurate statistics?
When the "baby boomers" are 20 years older the figure could be considerably higher - no wonder the government wants people to stay in their own homes, receiving care in the community.0 -
one woman in 3 and one man in 5 ends up needing a care home
seems very high to me - assuming 60m population then that would mean 10m women and 6m men in care homes...
id be interested in seeing the basis for this belief!
If 1 woman in 3 and 1 man in 5 ends up needing a care home from birth to death that would mean 10m women and 6m men in care homes.

so your stat should be " 1 in 3 of women and 1 in 5 of men ends up needing a care home in the last 3 to 4 years of their life"
makes much more sense that way0 -
