Sun lotion on face

I prefer the face cream I have that has no sunscreen in but worry about sun protection when its hot. I have a factor 30 sun lotion that I could use on my face in summer, does anyone use this on their face. Also do you think SPF is necessary in winter.

I do use a 15SPF moisturiser in the Summer but don't think its necessary in the Winter months.... some suntan lotions state do not use on the face.. just check before you use it..

Boots do or used to do a face sunscreen 15spf. It comes in a small tube. I've used this and it's really good. It's nice and light, I'd imagine the body sunscreens would be too heavy for the face. Winter months you should be ok with out spf, as the uv levels in the uk are low

There's loads of sun creams that are designed for using on your face and so not as heavy as others. I hated many suncreams as they left my face feeling really greasy and/or sticky. My latest weapon though is my hat - one of those wide brimmed leather Australian bush hats which I love to bits. Although they seem like they should be hot they're fantastic in all weather and it keeps the sun off my face brilliantly - I've taken it on holiday to Cyprus and Majorca the last 2 years and without anything more than regular moisturiser on my face I've never gone remotely pink

Hi, thanks for your replies. I wonder why magazines etc advise us to use SPF in winter as even when there is any sun then its never hot. I do think they go overboard sometimes. Years ago I never even thought about SPF for my face, in fact you never saw face creams with SPF in them and no one even thought about it.

I read everywhere that SPF should be worn in the winter as the sun is still out -even if its further away from us and still can cause premature aging signs (early wrinkles) and moles which could become cancerous. It does make me worry, but I have to admit- I don't tend to wear SPF unless I really really have to as I dislike the additional stuff which is in SPF- I am wearing SPF 30 by Nivea for the face at the moment but am also sporting 5 spots as a result.... (however the freckles have stopped forming!)

I know the spots will die down by the time I get to the end of next month, but they wont ever stop forming until I switch back to a non-petroleum, non paraffin, non mineral oil moisturiser. I am sure these do exist in an SPF cream but I have yet to find one which is affordable.

As a result, I only tend to wear SPF facial creams in the summer months and go back to normal moisturisers in the winter months. Inbetween (ie, April, October sort of time) I tend to use an SPF 50 stick on my forehead and around my eyes. Not really advised but I just hate having ugly pus filled white head spots!

I'm using an Almay factor 50 with sunless tanner at the moment. I'm finding it suits me very well as far as colour goes. Being naturally rather ghost like of complexion the hint of colour works well and unlike some of the ones I've tried it doesn't seem to be bringing me out in spots.

It still makes me cry though when the stuff melts a bit during the day and I get it in my eye. Anyone know of a brand that doesn't make eyes water?

Using sun cream in the winter in the UK seems rather pointless.

The Nivea facial SPF cream (only sold in a few stores I've noticed) doesn't melt on me and I wear it all day and then go to the gym later on- it doesn't melt at all. They have it in SPF30 and in SPF50.

It does, but the thing I keep reading is that the sun is what causes the UVA/B rays and its still around in the winter. Its not strong enough to tan but it is strong enough to cause the skin to get premature aging and enough to promt cancer. It isn't as bad as in the summer but its still a risk. I wonder though how many people are really willing to put what appears to be some kind of watered down plaster or paris (ie dense and white) on their faces throughout the entire year!

My doctor reccommended Asda's own brand of facial suncream SPF30 as she said this had been voted one of the best facial suncreams in Which magazine. It was 2 tubes for £5 last summer and although it did seem quite thick I was happy with it.

I've also used L'Oreal facial suncream (also reccommended by the doctor) but wasn't keen on the feel of it on my skin as it left me super shiney.

It just goes to show that the most expensive isn't always the best. I do agree with the other comments though, you ought to try and wear it throughout the year - I still apply makeup over mine as apparently this is ok to do after you've had it on 10 mins or so.

I use the Nivea one as well and can really recommend it. It doesn't melt and my skin just loves it. I use it as soon as the sun is out as my skin gets very dark very early on, and I'm terrified of burning-not to mention I spend most of my time outdoors.
