For various reasons I am looking into getting a part time seasonal job between now and Christmas. Can anyone recommend a high street company to work for? Who are recruiting and when?
I'm sure this this will be helpful to others as well so I'll start the list off:

Hello Katgoddess
I'll move your thread over to the 'Benefits, Tax Credits & Jobseeking' board, where it should get more views and responses.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

I think that the likes of Argos and the big supermarkets definately take on christmas temps - some of their jobs will no doubt lead to permanent opportunities - I would of thought that they will take people on fairly early too as the stock will probably already be startign to come in. There is no harm in contacting your local stores to see what the process is for applying - probably pick up application form in storeWeight Loss - 102lb0

M&S are pretty much always recruiting.
They have various contracts available which are store dependant but big stores usually offer more choice in working hours, easier to negotiate.
They do a telephone interview to see if you are 'suitable' and the number to call is 0845 3003725. I think you can now apply online as well by going to the corporate website and registering.
Lots of positives and negatives for working there.
Pay starts at £5.60 per hour which rises to £5.85 when you have completed the probationary period and change from being a 'trainee' to 'qualified'.(certain locations pay a bit more though)
Should be able to get a discount card which gets you 20% off pretty much all goods apart from the new 'Technology' section.
I've worked at various stores and some are MUCH better than others.0 -

Definitely.
I've been an xmas temp at sainsbury's, M&S and toys R us and M&S was by far the better empolyer. Do be aware though, that at the actual interview you will be expected to go out onto the shop floor and approach a customer so they person interviewing you can see how you interact with them. Their questions are all rather situational based too - tell me about a time when you....? So think out some situations beforehand that you can apply to the examples.0 -
in my argos branch we have just started our christmas recruitment drive, so i assume other branches have too.
employment opportunities after christmas are normally quite good, especially if you get in early and make a good impression.
