Martin: please examine unfair VAT on childrens shoes

Sorry if this is on the wrong place but I really resent the VAT being applied to children with longer feet.
If you look at the HMRC site it tells you they are exempt up to 14 years but I called our local clarks today and they said up to size 6 for girls and 9 for boys.

I had size 8 feet when I was 12 (I was 5ft 10). My children are tall as well, (daughter is tall 7 and a size 3) it's terribly unfair the law effectively penalises them for their height. In addition, why make a difference between girls and boys?Surely by now we would stop discriminating.

Surely it should be if you can prove the items are for your child and their age, vat should not be payable.

Clarks sell up to a size 9 in girls and a size 10 in boys shoes. :)

you got given the incorrect information.

I think she means that the VAT is applied to the larger sizes over and above sizes 6 and 9.

I totally agree with you here, my son's growth hormones all seem to be in his feet. He's a size 6. Which means VAT on trainers and shoes. Luckily he's small enough to get away with children's clothing.

I know there are many children with bigger feet than him. But it seems wrong to pay VAT on these shoes.

On the other side of the coin tho, I'm only a 5.5 so can get away with kids shoes most of the time.
