CT enquiry

If you move from council A to council B in June 2010 how much would you owe to council A for 2010-2011?

Just April-June or more?

Partner sister wasn't paying CT owed £59 from 2009-2010 and hadn't done anything about 2010 in council A before moving out so got a court summons for next week. This finally made her wake up though didn't stop her drinking and saying she's got no money (only gets JSA), expects us to pay. she's contacted them and apparently sorted payments out for August, drunk on phone as aways.

If you get the 'red letter' do you get chargers on top of what you owe?

Apparently she is due to pay 4 x £60 from August 1st. Now I'm not totally sure what she was talking about last night but owed £59 from last year.

If you want to spend time untangling the explanation a drunk person gives you about their council tax, then go ahead. If you have a problem with your own council tax, people here will help. But don't be too surprised if not too many people offer to help you help someone who will not help themselves. It is too easy to get sucked in

And she was drunk on the phone to you???

Are you taking ownership of the problem? Or leaving it with her?

CT is a joint and several liability. If you are living in the same property, the Council can chase you if she does not pay the CT bill.

Did you live with her until June?

we still live with her the tenancy is in her name, couldn't change it when we moved properties.

We have agreed to pay towards the CT but of course not all of it. We are only earning min wage ourselfs and get no help.

RAS is right, the CT is joint and you are all liable for it (certainly in my experience), the best thing you can do is contact the council and find out how much your yearly tax is and how much is outstanding. Then sit down and get her to cancel the DD and you take it over. This way she will owe you the money (and you don't face getting a summons), it sounds like you're not overly happy with this situation - do you still want to live with her?

This also leads to other questions, if she's on JSA then how is she paying for Elec, water etc. are you at risk from any DCA if she fails to pay the other bills. I would have a chat with her, early morning when she's sober, and tell her you plan to move (even if you don't) unless she can guarantee that you will be safe from these problems.
    Today's Debt:
    B/Card = £6,410 F/D = £3,190
    Loan = £0 Woohoo!
    Total Debt = £9500

    Total Debt = £14,325

No she plans to move which is the main problem. Nothing is set up as DD, she was horrifid that the new HA wanted her to pay that way for rent and not by payment card (she made it clean she was paying by card).

Don't get me started on utilities. Her son in the previous property was meant to pay them plus internet, everyone else paid for rent, food, phone etc. He never paid, pre-payment meter was installed, he moved out, bill from September 2009 still outstanding. She has now realised, after expecting us to pay all, that they both need to pay their share.

Other people pay for bills out of JSA why not her? plus she gets a widows pension too apparently.

We just want her out, so we can start a life together.

Just check acount online (account I set up, to keep track of things)

    01/04/2010 - 3/06/2010 = £72
    Total outstanding = £206.95

I don't know where this £134.95 has come from, the summons maybe, about £59 from the previous year I think too.

EDIT: Yes it is summons fee of £75 plus £59 from previous year.

She sound horrific! Thank god you're getting rid of her! I would get busy drawing up a list of outstanding bills, and dividing them up, give her a list of exactly what she owes and a month to pay them, get her new address of her as well.

I had a nasty one of someone not leaving me an address and !!!!!!ing off after leaving the heating on for three weeks - very expensive gas bill that muggins here had to cough up for!
