How do I work out monthly maintenance?

Just to give you a bit of background.....I receive maintenance from my ex husband for our two children. We have a court order that predates the CSA so we can't go down that route (or so I am told). Several years ago, my ex wanted to follow the guidelines of the CSA, instead of our court order (which I agreed to), this being 20% of his net income. Every year I would get a copy of his P60 and work out 20%. This amount would never tally with what he had paid me over the year so there was always a shortfall which he hardly ever paid. Then he found out about the 1/7th reduction if he has them for 52 nights of the year and automatically deducted this amount off his monthly payments even though he has never had them for 52 nights in one year. I have spent thousands of pounds with a solicitor trying to sort this out but to no avail, to get the money he owes me I would have to take him to court and the costs I would have to pay would be more than the money he owes me!
So, my question is this, I have his P60 for this year and I just want to check that I am correctly working out what he should be paying in maintenance every month. I have the figure for his total earnings for the year and the tax deducted. Are pension contributions included in these deductions and would I take his pension contributions off anyway? Please help, I'm getting myself all confused! Thanks.
