Quinces

OH's gran has given me some quinces from her ornamental quince shrub - they are small, about the size of a walnut - all the recipes i've seen say quinces are larger than apples. Are the little ones still edible or are they just for looks?

I think you'll find these are the fruit from the Japonica or japanese quince. They can be used the same as the large quince.
  • Hardpressed is right, ornamental quinces are called chaenomeles japonicaand can be used to make jelly. I remember my mum doing it, it was lovely.I've got a proper quince tree in my garden cydonia oblonga which,as you say has large fruit that look a bit like a big pear.

  • Thanks for that – I'm glad the're edible- free food :j . I’ll just have to decide what I want to make with them. I’m thinking of going down the jam/marmalade route. Do they taste a bit like pears/apples?
