Oh well, never let the truth get in the way of populist policies and just make it up and twist it as we go along and as it suits. Government ( any ) back in business then !

Nothing ever changes does it. Spin still alive and well.

it's not really material, whether the top amount being claimed is £104,000pa or £90,000pa (as with that family in notting hill) it's still ridiculously high. no-one on housing benefit should be living in a detached 5 bed house in inner london. if people want to live in central london and they can't afford to pay for it themselves, then they will have to accept the dregs of the housing stock, which means ex-LA flats. if there are none big enough then they should be relocated somewhere else.

OP if thats true, its not what i had hoped for.
I had hoped they would cut much deeper.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

A useful, well explained post, thank you.

I have quite a few 'DSS' tenants. None are paying me over £400 a week (unfortunately).

However, quite a few are near the local reference rent, as that's how the system works. So, when that goes down from the 50th percentile to the 30th, the tenants' LHAs will reduce and the aren't going to be able to afford the rent, so that will have to reduce, and that will have a knock-on effect on the local reference rent, which could spiral downwards. Also, in many areas, the overall rent levels for non-DSS are buoyed up by the LHA, so that will add to the spiral.

Whilst I think it's a perfectly sensible move by the govt., I'm certainly expecting this to hit my income quite significantly. For those LLs with substantial borrowings, this could be extremely serious.

Assuming that the govt's figure of £1.8bn is correct, that's all coming from private LLs. At 6% interest, that supports £30bn of mortgages.
    I think....

My partner and I rent a basic 1 bed flat in this area and we pay £550/month and already have to pay a top up (and would have to even if we got full LHA). £75 is only £325/month which wouldn't even get you a studio around here. We don't live in London just the SE. It's not our fault that council places are basically impossible to get - I've already said before that it took a friend of mine over a year to get housed and she had a voilent ex after her! They should not have been able to sell off the council places they did and they should have built more as well as that is the main reason this problem happened.

and in any case its more indepth than that, the new limits will be on the 30th percentile of the average rent (so lower than now)
This is going to hit us to be honest. I don't know how by much but I'm not looking forward to this as I can guess it will be substantial. My partner works part time and I'm disabled. We don't get the full amount of LHA even though my partner earns a low wage - around 8.6k gross last year. These changes are going to hit a lot of people who are already finding things difficult. Yet the people who caused this mess have got away with it and are most likely laughing at the rest of us .

Oh well, at least it got the benefit bashers excited !

Seem's Osborne et al didn't bother basing their policies on actual REAL claims, just hypothetical ones ( or one's reported as fact in the Daily Mail ). I wouldn't normally beleive anything a politician says but..

Maybe Alistair Campbell should vary his reading matter, then. Here's my post from an hour ago, quoting The Times on that very subject:

    It gives specific real examples.
