Just been away for a few days.
My friend from down the road has very kindly been feeding my cat while I've been away. :j
When I left home I put the dishwasher on, so that there were no dirty dishes waiting for me when I came home, but it still hadn't finished the cycle by the time I left the house, so I text my friend and asked her to turn the dishwasher off standby when she came in to feed the cat.
"Helpful" friend has then turned off every switch in the kitchen and I've come home to a defrosted fridge and freezer.
I don't think I'm insured for "accidental" damage on my contents insurance.
I suppose that will teach me to phone instead of text and make sure I'm really specific in my instructions next time.
So instead of saving a few pence by turning the dishwasher off standby, I've cost myself a packet by having to refill my freezer.
Oh well, you live and learn.

It's only a fridge freezer, and it wasn't full but even so, it was still probably £20 - £30 of food + a few things in the fridge that would have been ok.
Do you think I should say anything to her? She didn't do it on purpose and I don't want to make her feel guilty, but I am a bit annoyed!0 -
I know how you feel.
I have two freezers in an outbuilding, and a couple of weeks ago we went to get something from the freezer, and realised that both were not working:eek:
They had tripped at the mains box, and I lost the contents of two full freezers:mad:
You live and learn:rolleyes:0 -
That happened to me once , I told Hubby to make your all the TV,s etc were turned off and he pulled out all the plugs including the 2 freezer,s and fridge freezer. I had just stocked all three frezers with over £200 worth of frozen food. When we came back from holiday all was ruined. Luckily I telephoned my insurance and they paid out. So please check your insurance you may be covered after all.Competitions wins 2010

When we renewed our insurance, I asked about insuring the contents of the freezer & the person explained that it was automatically covered in modern insurance policies. (Of course, I don't know if they meant with their company or generally) but it is definitely worth checking.
As far as your friend is concerned, it probably depends on her personality - you know her. Some people would be sooo upset & feel really awful & not feel able to come & feed your cat again because they felt so bad about it. Others might be able to cope with being told about it, especially if you were able to see a funny side to it. So whether you tell her or not should depend on how you think she would react. I think I probably wouldn't, especially as the friend was doing a favour. After all, a kind friend is worth a lot more than a freezers worth of food in the long run.
But I would put a label on the freezer plug for next time! (in fact ours is labelled!)0 -
Phoned my insurers - yes I am insured. :j
But.... I have an excess of £50 to pay.
To be honest, I don't think there was £50 worth of food in there, and even if I "expanded" on the truth, I don't think I could push it to much more than £50 anyway.0 -
OH has insulating tape taped over our freezer plugs in a cross so they can't be pulled out by accident - or you would have to really try hard to do so!!!“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”
