Unsure about what my career options are

Hi there I really need some advice. Basically I graduated in July 2006 with a 2.2 in Social Psychology. I would really like to go into Social Work but really don't think I could afford to leave my current job and give up all my time for 2-3 years at uni again. Is there any other routes of getting into Social Work besides going back to uni? Or does anyone know of anything that I could do with my Psychology degree? Please help me as I am at my wits end lol!!!

  • Hi there,

I'm not sure about the social work side of things but if your psychology degree is BPS accredited then that opens a fair amount of doors - eg. clinical psychology, educational psychology, counselling psychology, occupational psychology, forensic psychology... However all of these would require additional study (usually a masters, or in the case of clinical a doctorate) and can be quite competitive (in the case of clinical psychology - extremely competitive!).

Additionally as you have you a 2.2, some of these routes or possibly all of them would require you to do a masters degree first as they don't accept anything lower than a 2.1.

If your psychology course isn't BPS accreddited then it's possible you can do a conversion course etc to possibly bring it up to accredited status.

I'm afraid most of my knowledge lies with the clinical psychology side of things since that's one of the career options I'm considering but if you want more information the BPS website is good or you could try googling 'psychology careers' as there's quite a few useful websites that come up (sorry but I'm not allowed to post links yet!)

Hope that helps a bit :)

Have a look at the General Social Care Council, the BPS, and the UK Government's careers advice site
Also contact your former university's career service as they usually provide support for former students as well as current ones.
