Funeral wear for Teens

I hope you don;t mind me postng here It seemed the most suitable place for it but if not feel free to move it

I know this sounds terrible but I am planning ahead , MY grandfather is terminally ill and we have been told it will be weeks rather than months now and as i have the warning i want to spread the expence.

for some obscure reason - probably because its the only thing i can do right now I have started panicing about what my daughter will wear to the funeral , My son has a dark grey suit that i think will be ok with a white shirt and black tie - if not Then we will have to try and get him a very cheapy black suit from somewhere ( any ideas ?)

But the only black my daughter has in her wardrobe is her school uniform and I will not have her wearing her school trousers to the funeral .

does anyone have any idea where i could lay my hands on a cheap but nice back blazer and skirt in this bright and colourful summer shopping season ? or have any other smart and respectful but cheap ideas for her ?

Many thanks for reading xx

Sorry to hear your bad news, it doesn't sound terrible, needs must and all of that!

Does it have to be black? Can I ask how old your DD and DS are? I attended my G'dads funeral last year and wore a green top, and black trousers, my DD wore bright summery clothes (aged 3) and my DS wore black trousers and a white shirt (Aged 6 at the time) then earlier on this year we lost my Gran, again I wore a green top with black trousers, and my DD wore a pink summery outfit and a white shrug cardigan, my DS wore dark blue pinstripe trousers and a white shirt (he was ages 7 this time!)

Both of my grandparents would have hated to see everyone in black, especially children and immediate family, have you considered something like this for your family? Maybe you could let the children have some colour i.e tie for son could be bright, as for your DD I wouldnt put her in a blazer not in this weather. Maybe a nice smartish top with some trousers or a skirt (black if necessary) obviously some people prefer black for funerals but I just wanted to share my experiences, which hopefully will be the last for a very long time!

thanks for the advice - I may see if I can find her a Nice black shirt and blouse or simple black shift dress , and my grandparents are very old fashioned and proper and wouldn't dream of wearing anything other than black to a funeral so I want to show some respect to their values at their funerals ( I hope its just the one for a very long time) . and my children and 14 and 15 so old enough to understand that . I am not sure if my 6 year old will be coming I would need to speak to my grandmothr and find out her wishes but I won't do that yet xx

I had a look at new look as thats where we buy most of dd's clothes but nothing really seemed appropriate .

  • Sorry to hear about what you're going through. If you just want work-style clothes (i.e. blazer and trousers, etc) you could try Primark.

Really cheap and not actually that bad quality, especially if it isn't going to be worn that often.

Good luck in finding something suitable

    Condolences,

Don't know if this sounds ok or not

Why not try Ebay or Charity Shops. You could ask some family or friends if they have anything you might borrow.

I don't wear black much but when my late husband died I wore a black skirt I bought on Ebay and a black cardigan from a charity shop - wore a plain white tee shirt underneath with a black and white silk scarf (think it was from a charity shop too).

    Kind wishes

I'm sorry that you're have to deal with this right now. I bought a black short-sleeved jumper with a white collar attached from Matalan the other day and wore it for work yesterday. It looked smart but was cool enough without being revealing. They also tend to have a good range of cheap but smart clothes that are designed as work clothes, but would be suitable in this situation too.
    Best wishes.

What a difficult time for you....
Although you are planning for this I assume that there is an element of the unkown here about when the funeral will be.
Have you thought about just accessorising your daughters outfit with black...if she were to go for a muted colour and have a black belt, shoes, scarf or bag...
It seems an expense to go to if you just end up buying clothes for this one occaision...I dont think it would be disrespectful for grandchildren to wear smart but comfortable clothes to a grandparents funeral...or maybe even wear something the that was your fathers favourite colour...

  • I would try the various high street shops. Previously I have worn my school trousers (that were smart) with a white shirt, I have also worn one of my work suits and recently wore a plain black pinafore dress. There is still stuff in work wear sections.

  • Hi. Sorry to hear your sad news. I saw black womens' blazers in Primark reduced to £4 from £19 yesterday. There were rails and rails of them and I'm sure you'd also find some cheap trousers or a skirt there to match.
