Loft ladder

Can anyone recommend the best/cheapest place to get one of those built in loft ladders that folds up when you close the door to the loft.

There are generally quite a few for sale on Ebay. I managed to find one locally for £20. Fitting was relatively straightforward.

I have an Abru 3-section loft ladder (see it on B&Q site) which was only used for a short time until stairs were installed. It's only missing the screws for securing it to the loft floor and in good condition with a safety rail. If you're interested, let me know.

got ours from b+q too - it is in 3 sections, stainless steel and folds up behind the hinged roof panel and comes with a "stick with a hook on it" to pull it down. I think it was around £50 last year.

I've had a look on the B&Q site. Can anyone say if metal is better/sturdier than wood?

I would say that is aluminium rather than SS!

It is all down to the quality really, aluminium is a lot lighter than wood, but the main difference seems to be the treads, on the B&Q site the aluminium ones look like they have a round step (like a ladder) but the wooden ones have a flat tread (like a conventional step ladder) obvious advantages are safety as less likely to slip off and comfort depending on your footwear and how often they are being used.

We got these too for going up into the attic - they're a great job!:)
  • The best value loft ladders that I found was on Ebay. The loft ladders are 3 section aluminium Easiloft made by Lyte Ladders that came complete with a handrail, an operating pole and a kit that converted the loft hatch to the swing down type. The ladders have a maximum load of 150kg and are very well built and sturdy, they are also easy to install. They cost £41 plus carriage which was the cheapest I could find anywhere in the UK.
  • I got some a few years ago from scr3wfix and they were pretty straight forward to fit, though you do need access to the loft to install it. I spent enough to get free postage, so if you are not planning to spend enough for free postage, ask your nearest and dearest if they were looking for something which you could use to bring your total up, or maybe get a few Christmas presents.
Check the height you require as older houses may have higher ceilings, and a standard ladder might not reach.

B&Q had a 3 piece wood ladder including trap door reduced from £150 to £100, which is not the cheapest option, but thought I would let you know in case you like the idea of wood.
  • I've came across another couple of sources of good value loft ladders apart from Ebay. A company based in Glasgow called Pryde & Sons Ltd.
There is also an Ebay alternative called Ebid that has various companies selling cheap loft ladders.
