I wanna build a website...

Hello moneysavers, (is this the best place to post?)

I wanna build a website for as little as possible, how cheaply can it be done? I want my own domain name, how much is hosting?
Also is it easy to do without much knowledge?

All replies will be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Free, if you do it yourself

Domain name as little as £5 for 2 years.
Hosting can be part of your ISP (usually free) or you can buy space on dedicated servers for a few pound a month. You could then go the whole hogg and "buy" a dedicated server for a year ~ £400 a year.

Yes, even something like MS Word can do it, or you can go upmarket and get something like Frontpage or Dreamwever and "drag and drop".
You could also code it manually.

Start by getting your head around the basics of HTML (just google 'HTML tutorials').
I would then progress to CSS.
After you're happy with both (HTML for the structure, CSS for the presentation), you can move on to Javascript (for the behaviours).

I have looked around and have found a good deal with https://www.dot5hosting.com I have got a 80% off code!!!

I had a look at the site with the html training and it looked like it would take a while to learn, my brother has offered to help, he has more knowledge than me on this.

Does anyone on here know where I can get a decent template from for free?

    many thanks

I taught myself html and css using free tutorials from www.webmonkey.com. I found it pretty simple really. I never learnt Javascript becuause I was only making one website, for the youth theatre I used to be a member of, and it was just an info site so it didn't need to do anything but I think it does get quite a bit more complicated at that point.
  • Teach yourself and use the free hosting you get with your service provider. A good book to learn from is the HTML & CSS Visual QuickStart Guide by Elizabeth Castro. It takes you through the whole process and explains everything you need to know in bite-sized pieces. Its designed in such a way that you can flip back and forward to find out how to do the bits you need.

You can use Notepad to write your HTML and it'll work just as well as anything else. However a better idea is to use an edititor that colour codes your HTML. This way, if you make a mistake it'll be obvious straight away because the editor will colour the problem code red.

If you have MS Office installed it includes such an editor, its called Microsoft Script Editor. You can open it from Word by pressing ALT+SHIFT+F11 or from TOOLS > MACRO > MICROSOFT SCRIPT EDITOR or you can open it directly by searching for mse*.exe under C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office and then creating a shortcut to it.

Or you could use a GUI tool that will write the HTML for you, you just draw and write your website. However if you do this, you might find that you dont learn much HTML as the tool is writing it for you - and the HTML they do create is often horrid! Maybe not a bad thing if you dont really care.
