I'm asking this for a friend
He's just filled out his self assessment and worked out he's owed around £950 in overpaid tax.
Does anyone know how long it takes to get this money back?

has he posted it in, or completed it online?
did he put bank details on the return,
if he posted it, it will take weeks to be processed and refunded (about 12)
if he did it online, then the refund could be processed within 10 days.
If theres no bank details a cheque is posted out, it takes upto 2 weeks to process once the actual return has been processed. He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -
If it's done online / bank account details provided / repayment requested - and not selected for additional security checks? Should be within a week.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

He needs to register to do it online - takes at least a week to get his Logon details. But - I don't know (short of ambushing the postie!) how he gets HMRC to put the paper one to one side?
Perhaps best to go with the flow and do it online next year (when - sod's law he will owe them)? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
