Selling photos and cards - what tax if any do I need to pay?

I'm a keen amateur photographer, I was thinking of selling some of my photos, I've seen some of the threads on stock photo companies / agencies which is quite good. but I was thinking of doing something for my more arty photographs like making some photocards, framed photos to sell at local arts and craft fayres, shops and bistros to earn a little bit of money in my spare time.
I'm not sure how much I'm going to make, but I was wondering, do I need to register for tax purposes (VAT, income tax etc) even if I only sell say £500 of photos over the financial year?
Any help would be appreciated, I am a bit green on the business (and tax) front!
Thanks.

You need to register as soon as you start trading. If you have no other taxable income at all then you wouldn't need to pay tax, but if you do have taxable income already then some tax will be payable.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Thanks for the reply Soolin. I have been looking through the rather horrid HMRC website. As I am already employed, this hobby of selling some photos will make me self employed as well. I'm not sure where I stand with VAT returns, though I can see how the few quid I make from sales will need to be considered under income tax...though to be frank, all of this seems to be alot of hassle for a little bit of pocket money. I shall read on and try and make sense of the rabbit warren of weblinks on the HMRC website0
