Other people have different opinions. MSSE is really all you need, as long as you don't need specific features of other AV products, or your OS isn't genuine.

However, Firefox with the NoScript extension is very much the first line of defence, along with common sense, caution and up-to-date Windows, Flash, Adobe Reader (or Foxit Reader etc as an alternative) and Flash Player. AV apps are like trying to stop the horse after it's bolted.

Hi OP, please don't take offence but McAfee and Norton are soo awful, i wouldn't have them for free never mind pay for them. They will wreck your computer and you'll never get them off it. If anybody is looking for cheap and effective antivirus protection, it doesnt get better than AVG. http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage

There are some free solutions around,

I would highly recommend either Microsoft Security Essentials or Panda's Cloud AntiVirus, both 100% free and simple.

If your using Windows 7, the firewall is very powerful and hated by even the most aggressive attacker, merely set your network location to be public and you are fully protected against remote connections.

This is true of Norton, but not McAfee.

There really is absolutely no need for anyone to spend a penny on antivirus software, it certainley isn't moneysaving buying these products which are surrounded in hype ! The numerous free products on the market and the built in protction within windows are perfectly good for your average home user.

I wouldn't touch MacAfee with someone else's very long stick. Norton isn't as bad as it used to be, and it used to be awful.

If you're going to pay for antivirus get Kaspersky or Nod32, but the freebies are fine for most people. I use MSE and it's excellent.

McAfee is great Very easy to use and effective. Once again, each to their own.

I had probs with McAfee and Norton (on separate systems) - just because it comes pre-loaded on most PCs these days (and is supposed to be from a reputable publisher) doesn't mean its the best. Most people use these as they're the 'default'/easy option.
CLearly a lot of free/v.cheap alternatives do better jobs. Check out the PC mags for direct comparison trials too.

EVERY computer should have an up to date version of the following free software:

Microsoft Malware Remover - check for updates when prompted and run the scanner with it daily (removes some or all trojans and spyware)
Malware Bytes' anti-malware - update it daily and run the big scan (removes some or all trojans, sometimes removing additional things MS Malware Remover might have missed)
PC Tools Firewall - intercepted a keylogger and other trojan downloaders on my computers

If you Google for these programs, ensure you download only from their official sites (for security integrity reasons).
Escaped from Barnet to freedom in the South-East!
