Can't enable cookies

Options
I am new on here - would be really grateful for any help at all

I have tried desperately to convince my computer to enable cookies but I can't so it means I can't access certain web sites. Also won't let me down load flash player and adobe updates.

I have Windows Vista:( 32 bit, IE8, McAfee enabled (tried to disable this but made no difference), Windows firewall turned off. I've tried the usual stuff of internet options, security settings etc and I've tried setting the sites I want as trusted sites - no improvement. It's affecting my PC use so much I'd happily chuck the lot in the bin at the moment.

ANY ideas VERY gratefully received

Cheers - CT!
