Tax Rebate?

in Cutting tax
Hey guys, quick question for those that are better versed in these kind of things.
I WAS on Job Seekers Allowance, and then got a new job.
My Tax Code was BR (Due to JSA) and stayed that way for the remaining tax year, however I recently got it changed to 647L over the phone. And then enquired about reclaiming my tax.
I was told that I would need to know the amount of money / tax I was charged while on JSA (because I can get some of that back?) before they could process my rebate, after much time on the phone I got given a address and told to apply in witting to find out how much I got paid between 06/04/2009 and 05/04/2010:
Jobcentre Plus
Canterbury BDC
Sandling Road
Maidstone
Kent
ME99 2AD
And then was told that once I have that, I have to send that information via post to another address:
HMRC
Lothians Area,
Grayfield House,
5 Bankhead Avenue,
Edinburgh
EH11 4AE
Now, this all seems extraordinarily lengthy. So I was wondering if anyone knows of a faster way I can get this done?
I sent away my P46 twice via post and still never got my tax code changed, and in the end it took just 5 minutes over the phone. So I'm a little apprehensive about sending stuff like this via post.
Thanks for taking the time to read

Do you have your copy of the P45 that was issued when you signed off? If you do just send that to the tax office.
If not then phone the jobcentre and ask if they can give you the information in writing then send this to the tax office.
The tax office cannot accept pay and tax details over the phone I'm afraid.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

Damn, stuck to the telephone then?
Are there like, no official places I can go and request a print out of the information? Like I said, my experiance with the post lately has been shocking, so if there is ANY other way, I'll take that. If not then post it is0
