Options
Hi All,

Lidl's have got some good quality Motorcycle helmets in stock today, £39.99.

There are lots of sizes from S to XL, the mechanism feels very well built, the pads are comfy, the visor movement is smooth, a spare visor and pads are provided. There is also a sun-visor top gun type which comes down when you flick a switch so you don't have to wear sunglasses.

They are TUV Certified and meet Norm standards, i got myself a couple if im honest i was that impressed.

Last time Lidl had helmets in I thought they were pretty good for the money, but I'm wondering if you're asking us coz you don't know any bikers?

I ask because the most inmportant part of helmet safety isn't the manufacturer or the cost or anything else like that, it's the fit. Fit is vital. A helmet that is even a bit big will move about on your head in a crash far more than you'd think it ever could. The thing is what is actually the right fit will seem tiny to the uninitiated- you get hamster cheeks in a proper fitting helmet! When you get your first helmet the best advice I could possibly give you is to go to a reputable dealer who does fittings. Your sons bike school can point him the right way, or if they are an Arai or Shoei dealer they have generally had Arai or Shoei fitting training (which doesn't mean you need to buy an Arai or Shoei by the way, those two brands are generally £300-£600 a peice and are vastly over-engineered compared to any eventually he's likely to encounter). A trustworthy shop will have a good range to choose from, and be able to fit your son with something to suit his head shape not just his head size, within his budget. They will check how it fits him at several key points on his face and around his head. You wont be paying extra for that, every dealer will stock helmets under £50, they're big sellers, and they expect you to ask them to help you find a fit. The dealer should also be able to tell you a helmets SHARP rating, which are a bit like NCAP safety ratings in cars. 4 or 5 is good, but not always expensive, I have seen 5 star helmets for £60 and 4 star for £40 before, don't worry too much about it though because a 5 isn't always better than a 4 and so on (it's an imperfect system) all you need to know is it's 3 or above. I know I've said it a lot but fit is more important than SHARP or cost or any other factor.

For his first helmet take him to a dealer.

Just as a side note, I took my 8 year old daughter to get her first helmet to ride with me and I said quite openly I will go to £200 if I need to. I left there having spent £29.99 on clearance stock, because that was genuinely the safest most secure one on her head, so don't fear the prices.
I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
    [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(

They are also doing open face helmets and boots [and possibly other biking stuff eg intercoms].

Thanks for this. I popped down there last night to pick one up. Well impressed with it, my previous one was very old so pleased to be replacing it. When I showed my wife she wasn't very happy about me wearing a "cheap helmet". I explained how, as mentioned above, the fit was miles better than my old one - nice and tight. She still wasn't convinced so I had a look on the web regarding the ece 22.05 standard and found the following:
    http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-helmets/ece-22-05.htm

Basically it means it meets the tough European safety standard, but as stated above the fit is the most important thing.

This particular helmet has the most awesome built in sun visor which drops down at the press of a button, and of course the ability to flip up the whole front of the helmet - meaning I can now still kiss my wife goodbye AFTER putting my helmet on (awwww)! :kisses3:

Comes in silver or graphite grey.

    Jamie
