in Cutting tax
I work for a company and obviously pay tax/NI with them. However, I am looking at doing some additional work on the side and know that I need to register as self employed. Can someone please answer the following;
- Does this affect my current employer?
- Will I now need to self declare for both my current job and any additional work?
- Do I need to advise my current employer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated about this subject.

There are several aspects to this: does your contract of employment say anything about other work?
There may be a question of someone being very tired and distracted so unable to do justice to the main job. This is unfair to the employer. There may also be conflict of interest if the extra work is for a competitor. It is not fair to the employer to use their facilities and time for the other work.
There is no overall rule that you must tell the employer, and they will not be told by HMRC, but there may be company rules and these things have a habit of coming out.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Thanks for the advise. I will look through other treads in this forum to get the answer. I've also decided to tell work as a gesture of goodwill as it is not for a competitor and will not affect my work.0
