Mortgage minefield

Not really sure where this query lies and its probably a vert common problem. Recently got knocked back on a mortgage with my girlfriend as our credit score wasn't good enough. I had 2CCJs which were satisfied 4 and 5 years ago but they were still on my credit history. I now have certificates to say they are satisfied. How can i A) improve my credit score and
make sure these CCJ's do not keep appearing? I have had no credit since 2005/2006.

Well for a start, they will stay on your credit file until 2011 and 2012 respectively.
Make sure on your reports that it states they are settled.
