work for an american company who over a four year period will give me around £30k in free shares understand these are subject to 20% american tax and 20% health. Believe when this money comes to me in Uk it is again liable to income tax is this true and how can I get round this apart from assigning it to a SIPP and getting the tax back.

You should be able to claim the US tax paid against any UK tax due. Ask your employer about this.
