prescription glasses

Apologies if this has been asked before.... I was very kindly directed to this forum...

Has anybody ever bought prescription glasses online rather than go back to their opticians? was just wondering how it worked and if anybody had any good links to good companies that do this?

I started to use an online service four years ago because I was no happy with the price and quality of high street opticians. I get my eye test and prescription locally on the NHS and then get my glasses online.

I dislike spamming forums so I have sent you a message.
  • I was a bit apprehensive about ordering glasses online until I joined these forums. I always thought that ordering specs online would be a risky thing to do but as long as you have your prescription up to date and know the details of it then it's fairly simple.

All you have to do is make sure that you know what kind of frame you want and then browse through them on the site. After you have cosen your frame you then enter your glasses prescription in and that's it!

I had to call the company to order mine as I have a very high prescription and wasn't too sure if they could get what I needed. It all came good for me in the end as they offered me not only the same lenses as my optician had given me before but only charged me a third of the cost.

There are many online glasses companies that are highly recommended on these forums so have a search around and I'm sure you'll find what you need.

The comany I used was online glasses direct - I think they are based in south england.
  • I've used Glasses Direct twice before and have no complaints. However, I've just tried to use a company called Goggles4u.co.uk (seduced by their low low prices) and as ever, if something looks too good to be true...

I ordered three pairs of glasses, one of which was sunglasses. They responded to say that the frames for the sunglasses were defective and to choose a different pair (surely they don't just keep one of each style in stock?) so I replied and got exactly the same response. It's taken two weeks and this evening I've told them to cancel my entire order. They offered me my sunglasses for free as an apology for their lack of response, but every frame I suggest is suddenly out of stock or "defective". Definitely going back to Glasses Direct even though they've just put all their prices up. You get what you pay for.

Has anybody else had problems with G4U?

I've used Glasses Direct and Select Specs and been very happy with them. I've mainly used them for the OH as he's always breaking his glasses- it's too expensive to buy from the opticians when they probably won't last that long!

Both companies were very quick as well in my experience.

Just copy and pasted my reply to your other discussion:

Glasses Direct have recently raised their prices. Having previously worked in the industry, I came across a couple of recent posts from an optical forum:

Interesting to see that GD have put their starting price up from £19 to £39 and now have a limited range in this category. The majority of specs are now £90 and over.
They're not exactly trumpeting this with their usual PR guff.
Looks like the venture capitalists on their board want their pound of flesh and have destroyed their cheap specs business model, I'm surprised that this hasn't been picked up by their competition.

Jamie is now much more expensive than the supermarkets and significantly more expensive than Specsavers.
It seems that he is trying to go upmarket - concentrating mainly on designer frames.
But people that buy designer frames like to try them on in the flesh, and like them carefully fitted.
His aspirations to be a billionaire and own his own island now seem - unlikely?

A recent online offer promoted by MSE resulted in a lot of complaints about delays and non-deliveries from Hong Kong. There are lots of ways of saving money in this life, but risking wearing ill-fitting and possible incorrect glasses? At least with a shop you can walk back in and sort out any problems. And Speccies, ASDA, and Tesco are probably comparable with the prices of most online companies.
    Been away for a while.
  • Have just heard back from G4U who say that I cannot cancel my order as they've already shipped me the two pairs of glasses they could muster from my order. Funny, they didn't mention having shipped them BEFORE I cancelled the order. Am I right in thinking that there is a 7 working day cooling off period with goods bought over the internet? They haven't debited my credit card yet, would they still do that even though I have told them I won't be accepting the goods? This company is a nightmare!!!
