Will I still get jobseekers allowance?

I am currently on NI based Jobseekers allowance. I have applied for a full time job at a local school which won't start until September. What will happen to my benefit if I am lucky enough to get it, as I will still be unemployed until September, but won't need to be actively seeking work anymore.

I honestly don't know but considering the name of the benefit 'job SEEKERS allowance' I wouldn't think so.

That's what I was thinking. So I sort of get penalised for getting a job (fingers crossed I get it).No money for 2 months.

Would you not like to be earning from working before the school job starts? Are you registered with any temp agencies?

LittleVoice, thanks, didn't think of that.It would then make me still actively seeking work while I waited for the agency to find me something.

As long as you are still within the 6 months period (for conts based JSA) or your income/savings is low enough to get income based JSA AND you are looking for work then you can still claim. I'm sure you'd be happy to do a temp job until then if you could get one? so there shouldn't be a problem signing on as long as you prove you are looking.
There have been several threads on this topic recently and the advice was as long as you are looking for a job then there is no problem.

I'll see if I can find one...here you go.

matt10001, sorry I can't answer your question. I haven't registered with any agencies yet. This is the first time I have been umemployed (made redundant in Feb.) and so it's all new to me. I will go to the jobcentre and ask.
  • You will be fine to claim JSA right up until you start, so long as you "continue to look" for temporary work to tide you over until september. In all honesty once you have given the Jobcentre a letter which confirms your start date, then they wont be too fussed on asking you what you've done to look for and will probably sign you pretty quickly. Same with adviser appointments.

you would still be expected to look for a filler job in the mean time as jsa is for people seeking employment and you effectively wouldn't be if you didnt look for a filler job.....
