I want to change my career.

Hello all.
I am just wondering if anybody feels the same as me?
I have been working in various office/admin based roles since leaving uni in 2003. I haven't been in a position for longer than 18 months. It is pretty obvious to me that I get very bored easily. I enjoy a job for the first couple of weeks but then I find it tends to get repetitive very easily. Just the thought of going into work on Monday to do the same thing all day everyday makes me want to scream in my head!
I know I should be fortunate I have a job and have never really been out of work but non of us are getting any younger are we?!
The thought of spending the next 30 years working 9-5 in an office fills me with dread.
I am thinking of doing some volunteer work in the healthcare sector to see if caring will suit me? Does anybody else do this?
Can anybody think of any other careers that don't involve sitting at a desk all day? I want my work to involve going out and meeting people and making difference to someone's life. Being a sales person is not for me by the way.
Thanks for a suggestions anybody can make!

Hi
I know what you mean, my job history is being in the RAF for 23 years which I loved, moving different places, different jobs etc etc.
I left on pension and have worked for a school for last 4 years.
At first had a simple admin job no real pressures but was asked to do finance as the incumbent left at short notice.
Ever since job has become more stressful and the blame culture is getting unbearable.
I know I am lucky to have a job, but just want to do something more worthwhile and enjoyable. Have no idea what really, as all my qualifications are administrative management and business management based and would have to retrain.
Good luck to you and let us know what direction you take.Nil Satis Nisi Optimum

Yes, my story too. I get bored easily. A great book for dealing with this is Barbara Sher's 'refuse to choose' which is aimed at people who don't want to just do one thing. Its a little idealistic, but offers a great alternative perspective.
At the moment I work in as a shop assistant, as a playworker and run a small home business. I'm also training as a life coach. I love it and would never, ever go back to the 9-5 office work.
I also believe that these days its a good thing to have a variety of skills and experiences to draw on.
Good luck!0 -
Thanks so far

I would really like to get out of this rut asap, that is why i think i may have to take a pay cut and start something completely new.
I would love to get into a job where i am not tied to a desk all day, i am able to go out and meet prople and to generally feel like i've achieved something........not to much to ask for eh?!

Perhaps you could do some voluntary work in the evenings or at weekends first? to see what its like?0

At the grand old age of 43, the thought of retraining and starting from the bottom again is daunting but not impossible.
I just have to figure out what I want to do and what I can learn in a part time way and still earn enough to pay the mortgage.
I will have to think this one carefully.Nil Satis Nisi Optimum

ppolly.
I have signed up for some things already, if care work isn;t an option i would like to work in a mentoring/advisory capacity. In debt no more!0 -
Yes i feel the same way OP, my current job is just boring the crap out of me, theres members of staff who are nosey when someone is off/late/or has half a day when to be honest its none of they're business. Im applying for jobs that i know i could do but as of yet ive not got anywhere. I dont think my situation is helped by the fact im still on 12k when i should have had a pay rise by now but to peoples inadequacies in not being able to do the pay reviews on time.
Some people shouldnt be able to run businesses0 -

Carework is one option. Can't think of anything else at the moment that involves going out and meeting people and making a difference. I can think of things that involve making a difference and meeting people but not necessarily going out...Official DFW Nerd no. 082! :cool:Debt @ 01/01/2014 £16,956 Debt now: £0.00 :j
