I know I should be grateful, but...

I really and truly hate my current job. I was displaced 18 months ago out of a job I loved to one that I feel is unsuitable to my skills (didn't have a choice in that I was advised I took it or was out of a job with no redundancy). The company was taken over last year and the place has now become pretty draconian in the way it treats its employees (at least that how it feels to a lot of us there) and there are a lot of unhappy people there now.
Am I the only one stuck in a job they hate? It's getting to the point that I'm in tears just thinking about it and is stressing me out. At this rate I'll be off sick due to stress before long.
If there's anyone else in the same boat, can you give me some insight into how you cope with your job? I really can't afford to just walk away and as I said, I know that in the current climate I should be grateful that I actually have a job, but surely this shouldn't be at the sacrifice of my health?
Any advice would be very welcome.
Thanks

Hi there !
I've just posted about changing my career......
It is really hard when you can't change your job and you are currently stressed out like yourself, I am currently really bored with working in an office and the thought of going in and wasting my time on a project which I know is very slow is very disheartening.
Sorry know real advice to give, just my sympathy and luck in hoping you find something you enjoy soon!

Thanks for replying - I've just read your post and like yourself, have considered something in the health care industry as I want to make a difference in what I do and not just fill some fat cat's profit pot until I retire. I would probably have to retrain tho, but maybe the sacrifice will be worth it!

No problem Izzie.
I don't like the thought of filling some fat cats pocket any more than you do!
I could moan forever at my job at the moment but of course in the current climate we should be grateful we have one.
All the best anyway

Maybe you two should stop moaning about filling some fat cats pockets and become the fat cat?
Work under your own rules then and eventually employ people to work for youThe Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

Go fot it!!!!!! Change your career get applying for other jobs in things that you could be interested in. If your job is making you so so miserable then it really is not worth staying there for health reasons. You only live once and if you are totally fed up and unhappy (depressed) then find another job.
I would stay in the current job you are in until you find a new job though, I would not resign straight away.. just think how depressing it is being unemployed I hated it..!!"£$%^&*()0 -
Hi I'm in a similar situation I guess.
The company I work at was also taken over about two years ago, but it wasn't until I joined where they started changing the rules and really put more pressure on the factory style work i.e. daily targets, monthly performance reviews, insane paperwork, more and more rules... stupid auditors walking in and out all the time...
It's reached a point where most people are hitting targets and it keeps going higher and higher.. The problem is that people can only do this because they are finding shortcuts and skipping proper procedures and making the odd blunder because of it.
I used to work my !!! off there and always leave 15-20m after my shift and get super stressed but since then I've realised that it isn't worth getting so stressed over this job, I'll just do what I can and try and remain on good terms.
4 people have left in the last 2 months so our dept is understaffed, they are not recruiting anyone new because they think we can handle it and have offered more hours for us instead.
I am going to stick it out here, as long as I can and save some money, but I wouldn't be surprised if I chuck it in before xmas and look for that better job which is out there somewhere!
Good luck, you are not alone!0 -

Concur, get out ASAP. You become downtrodden in an atmosphere like that. Then you lose the will, and then possibly full blown depression sets in.
I know this from personal experience. Have just recently come out the other side of such an episode. Stress, medication etc.
Looking back, and trying not to be bitter, I keep asking myself one question over and over....Why the phuck did you not get out of that hellhole earlier?
Good Luck with you next career move.

I'm currently going through a redundancy process after a year of change after change. I used to love my job, but don't love what it became, then had this thrown at me. And my first reaction wasn't anger or shock, it was relief..... I've realised that is telling me something, and I now can't wait to leave (but it's not until the end of September). And I'm thinking about what I want to do, and using the time I've got to do that. Some interesting things have come out of that, and I'm glad to be doing it. Not sure where any of it will lead, but....
One excercise I did (which was suggested to me) was to put constraints aside. So imagine that say, money, time, family etc. are not important. Then write down several statements that begin with 'I want to...' or just put ideas onto a piece of paper. During this time you are not allowed to say 'but I can't because of....' Then have a look at what you've got, put the constraints back in, and decide if any of it is do-able. One of mine was about wanting time for other things, but one of my constraints is that I feel I should contribute to the family budget. But when I was thinking it through I realised that maybe I could work part time instead of full time and do both. Not sure how it will turn out, but at least I'm thinking it through.
Good luck, it's awful when you hate your job, it really is. We spend so much time at work, far too much to be miserable.0 -
Thanks to everyone for their replies. I feel a little better knowing that I'm not the only one out there going through it.
Thanks for all your suggestions too, it's given me the push in the right direction that I needed today.
