Why do they still fit analogue tuners in DVD Recorders?

There is IMO a huge rip off in progress, with respect to domestic media recorders in general. This is even more so with "New Hi-Tech (must have) DVD Recorders ".
Soon to be redundant analogue only receivers, are still solely being fitted to the "latest " stuff.
Why oh why are they continuing to sell you stuff you will have to replace?
I suppose it was everthus, but this one is hard to justify, given the avowed gov intent to free the Band 4 and 5 frequencies for new digital services as soon as poss.
Maybe we are being ignored again, as little fish in a Big Pond

The UK is ahead of the game in digital. The EU does not have a clear stand on this. The US and Japan are going diffrent ways.
Vendors need a global standard and UHF RF TV is the standard.
Until a digital open market arrives we will have to put up with this.
I totally agreed with you it is frustrating!
FYI SKY+ does a copy to disk (via external DVD Writer) and I've wirrten to Humax who make my FreeView PVR asking when a simillar feature will be added to my unit via software upgrade.
Write complain and tell the vendors what you want.
I did this a while ago with a DVD Recorder asking for xVid, they wrote back and said in 6 months, they got it to market in 3!
Ask, haggle, complain, its our duty.Seth.0 -
Sony have just released a DVD recorder with a digi tuner, but it costs £400. No doubt other manufacturers have one ready to release, just waiting to sell as many without a digi tuner as possible, so that they can be duly replaced by techie freaks (like me) who got to have the latest, i.e. make more money out of us.0

Freeview PVR is the way to go,
Original 40gig Humax, now £129, 80g £169, Fusion 40g twin tuner £169, all at Dixons.
Fusion fvrt150 80gig twin tuner £179 at Argos
They (Argos) also had a Hitatchi home cinema DVD player with Freeview receiver reduced to £99 but likely all gone by now.
Prices still coming down.
Fusion will be releasing box with added DVD plyer, no recorder as yet.Moi....?

It is frustrating. With analogue being turned off in the not too distant future, it makes sense for consumers to buy tv, video recorders and the like with a digital tuner.
I cant see it costs that much more maybe £20 more you can get freeview boxes for £40+ so why therefore would putting the extra circuitry costs would not be great deal given that there will be no external box or added power supply.
No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you0 -
As freeview boxes have been available for some time, there isn't any reason for the decoder not to be fitted as standard, other than of course, marketing purposes.
Incidentially how many people are aware that the stand alone boxes aren't generally energy-efficient. Put you hand on the top of your box after a couple of hours and see how warm it gets - the estimate for the average cost of running the box is £12-18 per year, which is actually a lot of extra electricity.
I'm looking to buy a new integrated TV at the moment, curiously the digital version on the Sony set I'm considering is actually less expensive than the analogue one. Even if you do have a digital set however, it's still advisable to retain your set-top-box as this is the only way you can watch one digital channel and record another. Oh and don't get me started on DVD recorder formats.
In the same way the smaller the TV set the fewer number of scart sockets, but with 32-36inch you'll probably get three. So we all have to buy a scart doubler/trippler to add a dvd, set-top-box, x-box etc. A branded one - £15+ -what a bargain for a piece of cable and plastic.I do hope you're telling the truth?0
