I just found this site, which lists costs for implants in various countries.
    http://www.privatehealth.co.uk/private-dentistry/dental-treatments/dental-implants-guide/cost/

Accdording to them, a UK implant costing £2000 would be £600 in both Hungary and Germany. If that is true there's no way hubby's health plan will cover most of it.

At the risk of sounding like the Tooth Fairy's assistant (which I'm not), the dentists have pointed out that implants are not a permanent 'fix it and forget it' solution. People need to have good dental health and habits before they're appropriate (which it sounds as if you do), and then keep those habits up.

It's preferable to have consistent care too.

So, wherever you spend more of your time, getting your implants there would be the 'best' option, so that any problems can be fixed promptly and without a lot of fuss. Getting them done in Germany but expecting a UK dentist to give you the best 'ongoing' care or vice versa is fraught with potential problems.

The nice thing about treatment is Germany is that they don't expect payment up front. They send a bill; you collect the money; and THEN you pay the dentist.

They've obviously not had that much experience of british dental patients!

The dentist would send the bill, the patient would collect the money, the patient would blow it all on some shopping spree and stuff the dentist - they're rich enough anyway!

I pretty much trust my little cohort of regular patients, but anyone new arriving and it's at least pay-as-you-go if not payment up front!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I do return to Germany threeto four times a year so popping into the dentist who did the implants would not be a problem.

Anyway, the next move I guess is to get some estimates, and I have an appointment with my UK private dentist on Friday.

Nothing wrong with having treatment abroad if you have reason to go abroad on a regular basis anyway.

When selecting where you do have work done though, go for the dentist you feel will do the job best, not the one who charges the least (Unless of course they are one and the same!)

I now have an estimate from my British doctor, described here. I'd be very grateful for any comments.

Toothsmith -- I just read the notes at the bottom of your posts about finding a good dentist. Is it possible to know if a dentist is good just by vivisting the practice?
Last week I took my husband to a new dental practice in my home town that accepts new NHS patients - I got an appointment a few days later, so I thought I'd give them a try.

The practice itself was horrible! Tiny, cramped space, the waiting room as big as my bathroom and the walls still unplastered! The dentist himself seemed OK; he said that my husband's teeth were all OK. I had come to ask about getting crowns for him as his dentist in Germany said he needed them. I had forgotten that the German dentist had put in provisional fillings so maybe the new dentist didn't recognise that? He said there was no work needed to be done.

Just read that back to yourself!

I would say visiting the practice gave you an excellent indication of the attitude and attention-to-detail of the dentist here!!!!

:p Yeah, I know! It sounds bad. But I was preared to give them the benefit of the doubt - if they were just starting out then cash might by short, and at least people could get an NHS appointment, almost impossible in my home town! It seemed unfair and snobbish to judge them by the size of their practice.

I think toothsmith was referring to the inability of the dentist to see that there were provisional fillings present which required further work, not the decor.
