And next time don't give all the money upfront!

Never understand why people do that.

Most "taxis" outside London and large cities are "minicabs" which have to be pre-booked and are generally licensed, a licensed taxi (often referred to as a "hackney carriage") can pick up fares from the street. Even 50 years ago small local taxi firms were running minibuses, so running a minibus is no guarantee that the firm is large.

well again, depends on local licensing authority. here they HAVE to have a taxi license if they wish to carry passengers and charge, regardless if they're only taking private prebooked hires or accepting work from radios/pda's/ranks/streets etc.

Well for a return journey which is in another town and quite a distance, it is common practice for at least a deposit to be taken. In fact a lot of taxi drivers refuse to go for such a hire unless a deposit has been taken up front.

Albeit full fare isnt taken, doesnt mean that this taxi companys policy isnt to take the full fare up front. There are a lot of advantages to pre-booking a car and paying a deposit should (in theory) make sure you get your taxi home.

EDIT: Although i would agree it is wise to ask the taxi driver for a receipt.

Which is why I used the words "most", "generally" and "often" as some licensing authorities choose not to have 2 classes of licence.

I would say it was the other way around. That outside of cities they dont have to be pre-booked.

He handed over all that money without a receipt? I know my hairdresser hired a minibus to bring 10 of them into town from about 12 miles out the other week - and one minibus, one way was £100 at about 7pm. Two minibuses, both ways, plus a taxi, must have been about £500!

Well it all depends. Minibuses from a minibus company can pretty much charge what they like. Taxi drivers are regulated and charge a set price per mile. So effectively, it would be (at least for short journeys) cheaper hiring a taxi that happens to have a "minivan" than hiring a minibus. I dont think the OP meant an actual bus. More than likely it was something like http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/12/opel_vivaro-minivan.jpg

I didn't say not pay them at all! I said don't pay the full amount.

I've made numerous night out trips to another town with a taxi. Half there, half back.

I know, i was only saying maybe it is company policy to take full payment up front for return journeys.

Or more likely they did show up and a large group of drunken teenagers didnt organise who was in what properly and had the taxi and buses leave under capacity and left the rest behind and are all now trying to blame others or they inherited a few new members of the party along the line and didnt have enough space.
