colleen criticises wannabee wags

Not sure what to think about this myself.

http://www.itv.com/news/entertainment_532128835c414b71e95de3d9657d9410.html

Sure she has the money and can buy what she wants and in some ways good on her.

No, we shouldn't spend money we don't have - but we've all done it. (Else why would we be here)

Suppose she's just living her life and didn't ask to be some sort of icon (I've more time for Colleen than (for example) Posh). Who is to blame then - the media?, adverts?, celeb mags?

Dunno. Is there a way out? Is there a backlash underfoot - the BBC website today had an article about a guy who is going to live without branded goods?

just something that struck me.

I heard about this story this morning on the radio - and, typically, she got a right slagging off from the presenter for being a hypocrite.

But it got me thinking - Colleen strikes me as quite a shrewd young lady. I'm sure we've all seen the pictures of her in the papers struggling under the weight of her carrier bags, but in her position, who wouldn't?

However, she's also clever enough to have built her own career out of her good fortune (she's apparently made about £1m already). How many of the other WAGS have managed to pull that one off? And she's only 20. I love the fact that she's the face of Asda rather than some posh frocks shop.

I suppose it's easy to mock her for saying what she did as she is very fortunate. But I'd rather see the wannabes looking to her for inspiration than some of the other WAGS who really do milk it for all they're worth. Mentioning no names...

  • I think she's only saying what most people who live within their means would say. It's just the fact that she's got more means than most that probably makes it harder to hear. I don't think that squeezing the maximum in cash from her circumstances in the way she's done is a bad thing at all though (after all, it's what most DFWs do when circumstances present them with a computer and a Quidco opportunity :) )

If the papers couldn't fill their pages with 'Look at what Colleen's spending' type articles, they'd be running 'Look at the scruffy bird Wayne's hooked up with' pieces instead, so as far as the media goes she can't really win and might as well use the excessive interest to boost her own profile rather than give the press the power to put her down and keep her there. Apparently they both give lots to charity too, so some of that huge wedge actually does more good than supporting the fortunes of designer boutiques.

They both seem quite down-to-earth considering the lives they lead, and I think Colleen has a wise head on her shoulders for a twenty year-old. I certainly wouldn't slate her for those comments.
Eek! Someone's stolen my signature!
  • I think I read somewhere that she & Wayne has sold the rights to their wedding next year for £2m but instead of keeping the cash it's going to the place that looks after her sister.

  • Can I ask the ladies on these boards one question?
If your husband to be was caught sleeping with prostitutes would you marry him?
If your answer is yes you are a gold digger - she needs Wayne more than he needs her. Despite his monkey looks he will always get beautiful women after him because of his money.
If you answered no - you are sensible but unknown and will never be famous.
    Which would you prefer?

Thank you for your completely black and white view of this subject.

If he was already your husband, you probably wouldn't be thinking about marrying him. The deed would already be done.

You're assuming that all men who sleep with prostitutes are fantastically rich. Not so.

    Are you sure about this?

Again, are you sure? Does "to be famous" equate with "not sensible"?

I'll let you know when I'm actually in this position.

Despite the media's best efforts, no one actually knows what goes on in a relationship - this one or any other.

I find your view a tad simplistic, I'm afraid.

i think she deserves some credit for being a 'celebrity' who has stood out and said that it's not wise to try to live her kind of lifestyle without her kind of income!! lots of celebrities seem to cash in (from 'those adverts', to having their own perfumes) on the fact that people want to be a bit like them..... it's not their fault that people get into debt by trying to copy them, but who else even acknowledges it? the ins and outs of her relationship with mr rooney seem a bit obscure to the arguement.

surely anyone who stands up very publically and tells people to live within their means should be applauded? (even though it is quite sad that it needs to be done)

I think it's out of order that she's been slated.

We tell everyone who comes on here who post a SOA with food shopping at £500 to "get a grip"!

She has probably had this question thrown at her and her words misinterpreted (sp). Good on her for telling people not to buy stuff they can't afford! Wish someone had drummed that into me when I was younger! :p

I agree with MinnieSpender- this is a very simplistic and (if I may say so) naive opinion. Who are you to judge who's a gold digger or what goes on in other people's relationships? They are a very young couple who've been together since their early teens; I think they seem pretty clued up and down to earth.

In answer to your question to "the ladies on these boards", it depends really on the relationship you had to begin with, whether you felt it was worth saving or whether there were other issues to take into consideration. Life's not black and white you know.

Who is Colleen? (I haven't clicked the link, can't be bothered). Is she some Sun/Hello/OK 'celebrity' ?
