Need advice please

Hi

I need some help on getting a credit report to find out how much I owe. The thing is I don't have a bank account, which is required by Experian and I don't know what to do next.

I know I owe money, I ran up debts of about £3500 to £4000 between, NatWest, American Express, Orange and Telewest Broadband (this debt was recently highlighted when my brother opened a Virgin Media account, who took over Telewest Broadband, but they overlooked this as this wasn't his debt and they opened the account for him, this was at my parents house btw) approx 7 years ago this September.

This is when I moved house (I was living at my parents house) rather suddenly, not because I owed them money, but because I moved in with my now ex-girlfriend and things were complicated and very stressful down there due to her ex and I made no attempt to pay these people back or sort something out.

Having moved back into my parents (please note "ex-girlfriend" in previous paragraph) it's time I sorted things out, I just don't know where to start, I know I need to find out how much I owe, but I don't know how find that out.

That basically sums up my situation, if any more information is need just let me know, hope someone can help me.

Thanks

    Hi Craig

To get your credit report have a look at this, Credit Ratings
tells where and how to get them

As the Virgin/Telewest account what you owe(d) will have no bearing on anyone else or the address

Have you made any payments or made got into in touch with any of your creditors in the last 6 years?

Thanks for the link, will check it out right away

As for the Telewest thing, when my brother spoke to the Virgin salesman, everything went ok, until the guy mentioned there might be a problem setting my brothers account up due to an outstanding bill for Telewest, but if you say that should have no bearing on anything, then I'll go with that.

And as for getting in touch with any creditors in the last 6 years then no, I've made no attempt to.

Thanks again for a speedy response, very much appreciated!!!!

I don't understand why they would even need to mention the previous debt to your brother as it wasn't your brother's debt to begin with? I wouldn't be too happy that the company are telling someone else about the debts even if they do live in the same household. I could be wrong and it could be normal but I certainly would be more than a little bit naffed off.

Because all your debts are so old (6 years or more) I think they are statute barred, again could be wrong. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along shortly.

Can I just add, that last August-September my now ex set up an account with Littlewoods in my name, which they accepted no problem, which kinda surprised me as I knew my credit rating would be poor.

I thought it was odd that they mentioned the Telewest debt, I can't remember his exact words now, but he definitely brought it up.

Obviously in the end they said it wasn't a problem and set my brothers account up.

If you've not had contact with them for 6 years the debts will be Statute barred " so won't ( or shouldn't)show up
    on your credit report
As for the guy at Virgin:huh: - I ain't got a clue what he might be trying to infer?
    The Debt was with you,
it is not linked to the House, address, or anyone with a similar name:A
and as it has gone past six years with out payments or acknowledgement of the debt(unless they have a CCJ against you) they can go whistle

    have a look at this

Can I just say Thank You all so much for the speedy replies, you guys are fantastic!!

I mentioned that I have a Littlewoods account in my name, surely if I had bad credit, I would have been refused it?? This was at my previous address by the way.

And this may seem like a stupid question, but on the Experian site, is the credit card details section purely for payment if I choose to join after the 30 day free trial, as I don't have an account of any kind.

I googled to find a way around this and someone said they used there partners card details to get past that bit, but I'm still unsure??

I've just spoken to my father who said, that I have at least one CCJ against me as some people showed up at their home, this was more than 2 years ago, he can't remember the exact date though. At the time he didn't make me aware of this.

    Hang on a minute:eek:

You are saying that your ex has opened a Littlewoods account, in your name ?
Get in touch with Littlewoods immediately, and make them aware via phone call at first, and in writing (sent recorded delivery ) that someone has fraudulently opened an account in your name and get that account closed .

The CCJ thing, you can check on http://www.trustonline.org.uk/, they do charge :(
CCJ's ain't in my field of knowledge:(

As for Credit report you can get the Statutory for £2(send a Postal order)

She didn't open the account fraudulently, we was together when she did it, it was just in my name. And I've just let her use it still, I still have access to it, but I don't use it at all. And when we split it was all very amicable, there's no bad blood between us what so ever.

Going back to my question about that, surely if my credit was poor I would have been refused, either that or they are extremely leniant with who they accept??

Again, thank's for all the help :) and I'll check that link out now.
