Please apply in writing.

Does please apply in writing usually mean handwriting, or just writing (as opposed to phoning) and so a typed or printed application is ok?

I've seen jobs advertised that do say please apply in your own handwriting, or similar but this just says writing. What to do?

If it only says writing I think typed would be acceptable. I think they say writing as opposed to phoning.

Please apply in writing is via post rather than via email or phone. Handwriting should be fine as would typed. Personally I would type the application on the computer - but if its a printed application form that you have to fill in I would fill it in in capitals and in pen, but the covering letter written on the computer - shows that you have computer skills then aswell!

An Pre-Printed Application form needs to be completed in Block capitals

An online application obviously needs to be typed online (!) sorry for the obvious!

A CV should always be typed

A covering letter should always be sent with any type of application and in handwriting (unless your handwriting is totally appalling!)

In this case OP, I would assume that they want a covering letter applying for the position along with a CV.

    I would do this too.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
