I want to reglaze my glasses with new lenses

Options
Hi all,

I'm looking to get my lenses replaced in my glasses as I really don't want to buy a new frame. The frame that I have is only 2 years old and in pretty good nick. I know that when I went into specsavers a few months ago they told me that they could reglaze my frame with new lenses, the only problem was that they wanted to charge me £180 for my lenses which I thought was still a bit steep. I wear Bifocals which react with the light and my lenses have to be made thinner because of my prescription.

Could anyone point me in the right direction of where I should go as I've heard of many online retailers offering the same service much cheaper. I have a budget of around £130 - I know this may be a little unrealistic but times are hard at the moment.

Thanks.

  • There are lots of reglazing services available on the net from various glasses retailers. I actually joined these forums because I was looking for same kind of thing that you need and was given some advice by a people who had used this service before.

I used https://www.onlineglassesdirect.co.uk after a few people on these forums recommended them and found the service to be very good and easy to use. There are, of course, many other companies who offer the same kind of thing - I suppose you just need to 'Google' and go with whoever takes your fancy!

    Hope this helps.

We have used this company on a few occasions http://www.ciliaryblue.com/. Fantastic service & a good price. Our glasses were single vision, not sure about bifocals though.

If it is two years since your last test you really should be retested before buying new lenses. So much can happen with your prescription in two years and the opticians are trained to spot any illness too.

I have to pay a lot for my lenses too, i have the same problem, cost wise, thin lenses, varifocals etc.
Personally, when i get a new pair i will not have the darkening thing on mine and i hate it. So less cost there.
I really wouldnt recommend getting new lenses before getting another test. Any qualified optician who does this without recommending a test is not doing his job properly and i wouldnt touch them with a bargepole let alone trust them with my eyesight.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

ive recently purchased some glasses from onlineglassesdirect.co.uk they were really helpful & gave me a great price....its nice to deal with a company that actually has "customr service"!!!! hope this helps. x
  • Hi,
Just wanted to to say thank you for everyone's advice and tips. I ended up going with onlineglassesdirect as they seem to specialise in complex lenses and I couldn't find a cheaper price. You were right about their customer service melbonator - a very nice lady phoned me soon after I placed the order to confirm everything with me and that really put me at ease. Let's just wait and see if the rest of the service is just as good - fingers crossed!!

I don't think you'll have anything to worry about with onlineglassesdirect as I've had excellent service from them and they come highly recommended on these forums. I always believe you get better customer service from some of the smaller retailers as they don't treat you as 'just another number' and these guys could certainly teach some of the bigger retailers a thing or two in good customer service.:)

I originally tried a company called 'perfect glasses' and waited 5 weeks for some glasses before cancelling my order - turned out that many other people on these forums had similar experiences with the same company so it pays to do your homework! This forum has saved me a lot of time as well as money in the long run.

I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to report that have used Ciliary Blue and am very pleased. Would recommend them for reglazing. Very quick, efficient and competitively priced.

I tried out Glasses Direct and they weren't very organised, or professional. Ended up having my glasses sent back without reglazing - I think their main business is customers who want to purchase new spectacles. Whereas Ciliary specialise in just re-glazing.

Ciliary Blue hide behind a PO Box number. It would be handy if they used a proper address.
  • They do glazing work for my Optical outlet when we need it. I think they have a PO Box because they have more than one lab, the one we deal with mainly is in Warwickshire, though we have sent our work to one in Devon too.
