How much notice do you have to give when moving jobs?

Hi,
My wife has been recently offered a new job. Her current employer never provided her with a contract when she started. She has written her letter of resignation stating she will work 2 weeks notice, a week for each year she has been there. Her boss brought her into his office 2 days later and said she needed 4 weeks as stated in the contract. There is a contract in her personnel file however it is not signed by her and she has never seen it up until now. Can he enforce the 4 weeks notice?
Many thanks in advance
Richard

If she's not signed it, then no they can't enforce it. Does your wife have a copy of the contract she did sign?CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J0

When you start a job they are supposed to let you see the terms and conditions. Can she go back in and negotiate with them? Does she really need a reference from them? Also is she owed holidays? If so get her to remind them about them.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera.
