How "laminated" does it have to be ?

Ordnance Survey do the equivalent of, or very close to, 1 mile to 1 inch.
Metrication makes them 1 Km to 2 cm (approximately 1 mile to 1.25 inches)

    It is a 1:50,000 ratio scale (1inch:1mile = 1:63,360)

I used these years ago when doing road rallies and similar.
I needed to make them both stronger and so that I could write/draw on them time and time again.

So I "laminated" them myself !

Used a transparent self adhesive sheet similar to Fablon and covered the map with it.

    OR TRY HERE:

    http://www.mapsinternational.co.uk/create/custom.htm?0&none

You can get a lot greater scale (1:10,000) than you need (more than 6 inches to 1 mile ) or 1:50,000 or 1:40,000 which is 20% to 33% BETTER than your 1 inch to 1 mile

Select a map size that is:
    A1 = 594 x 841 mm = 23.4" x 33.1"
    A0 = 841 x 1189 mm = 33.1" x 46.8"
    Double A0 = 1682 x 1189 mm = 66.2" x 46.8"

    1:10,000 only just fits Pontypridd & Bridgend on the 2 x A0
Accordingly 1:40,000 only just fits the same on A1

    SOMETHING SPECIFICALLY LIKE THIS:
    http://www.mapsinternational.co.uk/create/maparea.htm?300298&183207&0&a02&l&mvplus&None&None

This company will make a map centered on any location you specify.
Will encapsulate it (laminate), frame and mount if required, even make it magnetic if needed.

I chose LLANHARAN or TONYREFAIL as the "centre on a placename" option.

    HOWEVER THEY ARE NOT CHEAP ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Depending upon the specific map, the size, how mounted etc.. prices seem to start at around £200 and go upto about £700 ....

PLUS VAT AND PLUS DELIVERY !

Uhhhmmm, I found exactly what I was looking for on there (1:100 000 Centred on Gilfach Goch using A1 or A2) but its really way too expensive @ £79 plus vat and delivery!
The reason I want it is my husband has just started a new area in his job and he needs a visual tool to help him see where each call is in relation to one another (so he can do the ones closest to each other on the same day and stop running around like a headless chicken LOL).
Maybe someone can think of something else that would have the same effect?

    thanks

Exactly how large can this map be and how much detail do you actually need?

Is it to be wall mounted at home/office and so A0 or A1 or similar is not a problem?

Or is it to be used on the road, in a car etc., where A0, A1 and even A2 might be cumbersome?

You originally said it had to be a least 1 inch to 1 mile (I presume to have enough fine detail), but then said " I found exactly what I was looking for .... 1:100 000 Centred on Gilfach Goch ....."

100,000:1 is nearer to 1 inch to 2 miles.
Given this is in both directions, you'll end up with a map 4 times smaller (and 4 times less detail) than you initially requested.

    Re "lamination" ?
Does it have to be stiff like most A4 laminations you tend to come across?
Or is it just a case of being able to write/draw on the map with a dry wipe marker or china graph pencil, and then easily remove these ?

If the latter is Ok, then I suggest you get a standard Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 map (hopefully the area you require is not split across 2 of them) and then cut out exactly the area you require, covering it yourself with a clear self adhesive sheet.

If it has to be a "proper" hard/stiff lamination, take the same cut to size map to a high street printers/copy shop and get them to do it.

Yes, its to be wall mounted and laminated so I can use those little sticky circles

Sorry to be so unspecific, the 1inch to 1 mile was a rough estimate, once someone mentioned somewhere I could go and have a look at an actual map I found the 1: 100,00 to be more than adequate.
Unfortunately I dont think OS maps will do the job as what I want covers two areas and I dont think joining them would be practical.
Thanks for helping me clarify, I'm not really all that specific am I (Well *I* know what I want, its just explaining myself thats the problem ;))
