I'm guessing that 0% CC are out of the question?

Could/would you be willing to step in and help i.e. could you get a 0% card and transfer her balance o onto your cards, as her apr is ridiculous, she could then make the minimum payment directly to you. This would still be high but a lot lower then paying all that interest.

CCCS are usually very good and the pack should contain some helpful info. But look at paying the people you owe first.

Good luck with BG. OH had the same thing with eon they didn't send a bill for the first year and then demanded they get paid over £700 we arranged a direct debit which seemed to keep them happy, but takes ages to pay off.
    Today's Debt:
    B/Card = £6,410 F/D = £3,190
    Loan = £0 Woohoo!
    Total Debt = £9500
    Debt as of 26-1-11:
    Total Debt = £14,325
  • Thanks for the advice guys, very grateful

I'm just about to send off a load of letters offering token payments and asking them to freeze interest for a while. Worth a shot.

I shall also act on the ideas everyone in this thread has mention like ringing up the secured debt people to 0% CC's.

    Ill keep you all updated

    Thanks

At the moment she is showing a shortfall of 42 a month before addressing the mortgage arrears. You need to do the following:
    1) check she is getting all the benefits she is entitled to
    2) Sort out the gas/electric as this is no doubt contributing to the shortfall paying them that much each month.
    3) You need to address the mortgage arrears and the whole gas/electric issues in terms of debts to be repaid first - all unsecured debts will get a token pound payment until she has decided what to do re potential bankruptcy/selling of house/or paid off mortgage arrears.
    4) what's the second secured debt/hp? can she take a payment holiday at all?
    5) In terms of helping her your best bet would be to buy her food in the short term, if you take on her debt it will then become yours and potentially drag you into the mire too. It also can have bad effects and split families up - both of you could end up quite resentful and bitter.
    Good Luck sorting it out.

Plan of attack atm, Is to do the house up and sell it, but, it won't be for another year until this can happen.
The house is in no state to be sold yet. I gave my own estimate of 105,000 which should be the very least of what she should get. Plus, its not gonna cost alot to throw some paint on all the wall and do the garden up.

It's gonna take you a year to paint the walls and do the garden!!

Tidy it up and get it on the market now. You know it makes sense.

    1) check she is getting all the benefits she is entitled to : I believe so

Its far too cluttered to do that atm, Gonna have to sell all the junk first then start on it.
  • British Gas have now basically said you can either have pre-paid meter and pay £25 + energy usage or have the bailiffs come round to clear the debt.

So thats £25 a week to pay off the arrears and probably around £25 for gas. So, on average, she will have to pay them £216 a month. Meter is being installed next week

Any advice on this situation would be grateful.

    ps
Going to apply for the British Gas grant shortly but don't expect that to come through.

How come she is using £25 per week gas? £30 per month would be normal, slightly more for a key meter.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Do you live anywhere near mum? Can you read her meter regularly?

make sure that any hot water tank is set to 60 degrees, not higher. Check out any old boiler. make sure she has not get the heating and hot water on 24/7.
