Record numbers of Britons are being forced to work part-time in a desperate move which cripples their finances, official figures revealed today.
Experts said the recession has triggered a new phenomenon – ‘part-time Britain’ – and warn the situation will get even worse as the Government takes the axe to the public sector.
Nearly one in eight State workers are expected to lose their job as the Government battles to control Britain’s financial crisis in what was described today as a ‘mass cull.’
Over the last year, the number of people who have a full-time job has collapsed by 468,000.
But the figures, from the Office for National Statistics, reveal a part-time jobs boom, with 255,000 people starting to work part-time.

People take these part time roles for a variety of reasons (necessity, work-life balance etc).
Is is possible that employers are seeing more and more job roles being of a part time nature? It sounds like it.0 -

Exactly.
I know many people including dentists etc that work 3 days a week and get a full time wage
I myself have been reviewing options of going part time.
working out if I could reduce my days either by working less hours days or simply just working a condensed week.
It should dramatically improve my work / life balance:wall:

Due to running two businesses I tried to work part time as a chartered surveor as I was working all the hours under the sun and hadn't even had a holiday (time off not necessarily going away anyway) for over 10 years. But found myself doing a full time job on a part time salary, so I just retired early 10 years ago at 42.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0

Yeah a 40 hour per week role can be done in 15 to 20 hours. I despair. Nothing to do with the economic mess the UK is in then?
There are less full time jobs out there so people are taking what they can.0 -
unless you marry that up with statistics that show how many would rather work fulltime it's hard to know if that is a bad thing or a good thing. a lot of people want to work part time as it gives them a better work life balance. also, who decided how many hours are fulltime and how many are part time? i'm sure another study will be along soon to say we work the longest hours in europe....Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0

Technology, such as office automation, and communications improvements make some processes much quicker to complete.
In addition, customers are now able to manage some of their own data via online portals.
This does change the amount of work back office staff have to do.
Why else would companies spend millions on automation for heavens sake? They do this to reduce costs and that includes headcount.
It doesn't make it any more pallatable to the employees.0 -
Just because a particular job role was full time 20 years ago it may not be full time today.
